#Repost Yesterday's show celebrated the strength of women, and the power of the female future. It was dedicated to every woman who believed in herself enough to take a leap of faith. We should all remember that we’re standing on the shoulders of giants: Coretta Scott King, Esther Lederberg, Donyale Luna, Gae Aulenti, Margherita Hack, Nilde Iotti, Rita Levi Montalcini…extraordinary women who made history with their vision and undying dedication. In fact, the 35-year-old tennis player may be thinking of slowing down her career like her older sister, Venus, to prepare for the time when she can no longer play competitively.
One of the ways that Serena Williams has been showing signs of relinquishing her crown as the best female tennis player in the world was when she gave a nudge to Angelique Kerber for playing such great tennis this season.
“Perhaps it should come as little surprise that when the WTA held a contest Friday on Instagram for users to vote for the player the year, Williams did not pick herself, but rather the player whom she played against twice in a Grand Slam final this year,” reports the Washington Post.
“She had an attitude that I think a lot of people can learn from, just to always stay positive and to never give up,” she said after the 2016 Australian Open. “I was really inspired by that. So, honestly, she’s a really good girl. If I couldn’t win, I’m happy she did.”
Angelique is now the world number one tennis player, having just surpassed Serena Williams this autumn. Along with the German player, other athletes are on the rise.
Additionally, Serena Williams recently withdrew from WTA Finals in Singapore, citing a shoulder injury that has been plaguing her since spring. Many news media outlets have taken this as a sign that her professional career is drawing to a close.
“The only pertinent questions about Williams right now in tennis terms are these: Will yet another long break help or hurt her career? Does leaving the tour this long signify anything foreboding? How long can she keep up this high-wire act?” ESPN reported.
Taking breaks may be a very smart thing for Serena to do as she is older now and her body may require more time to heal properly. Playing quality and not quantity tennis is what she is looking for right now.
She has admitted before that she won’t be playing tennis for the rest of her life and needs to find other outlets.
“I’m not going to play tennis forever,” she said to CNN Money. “I know I have been playing forever, but one of these days I’m not gonna play so it’s always good to know that if I want to go to the office… I can do that.”
“It’s the best thing because it’s like I don’t really care [about the Open] because I have to make sure these girls and these amazing models look great,” she continued. “I can’t have Anna Wintour sitting in the front row saying, ‘This doesn’t look good.’ That’s always been my saving grace here.”
As she is taking these breaks from the court, she is not wasting her free time. She is getting more and more into popular culture to promote her fashion line. She was featured in Lemonade, the latest concept album by Beyonce, and even took part in some of her concerts.
When she is not hanging out with Beyonce, she is with other celebrities like Gigi and Bella Hadid, Donatella Versace, and her boyfriend, Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian.
Right now, she is pinned at the top of his Twitter for all the work she did at New York Fashion Week. Alexis was right by her during the week to show his support for her brand and business ventures.
