Little Copycats? Little Mix Accused Of Copying G.R.L. With New Song

Little Mix lit up the stage when they performed their new single “Shout Out To My Ex” live on The X Factor U.K. on Sunday night. However, it did not take long for fans to compare the song to one by another major girl group. Even the album’s artwork has been compared to the artwork on Australian girl group Bond’s Classified album.

The British pop stars have been accused of ripping off rival girl group G.R.L. with their new single. Sunday night was a big night for Little Mix as they returned to The X Factor stage with their performance of their new single “Shout Out To My Ex.” The girls won over their fans and even Simon Cowell, who praised the performance as one of the best, according to CelebsNow.

“This was one of the best performances ever seen on The X Factor. Congratulations Little Mix,” The X Factor boss wrote on Facebook.

Some of Little Mix’s and G.R.L.’s fans noticed that the song sounds similar to the group’s 2014 hit song “Ugly Heart.” Fans even got the hashtags #ShoutOutToUglyHeart and #UglyHeart trending shortly after their performance.

“I can’t believe Little Mix ripped off GRL like that omfg #shoutouttouglyheart,” one disheartened fan wrote.

“Love the fact that @grl Ugly Heart is trending due to Little Mix pretty much ripping it off!” another fan added.

“LMAO Little Mix’s new song Shout Out To My Ex is good, shame they’ve basically took the chorus from GRL’s Ugly Heart and changed the lyrics,” a third fan added.

Little Mix have not commented on the similarity between their song and G.R.L’s latest single. Just a few months ago, Edwards shared an Instagram video of herself sharing her love for the song. She filmed herself and her stylist Aaron Carlo singing along to “Ugly Heart” and included the caption: “Jamming out to @aaroncarlohair favourite song!”

Even G.R.L. noticed the similarities between their song and Little Mix’s new single. One of the bandmates hit back at their rival girl group on social media by also tweeting the hashtag “#shoutouttouglyheart” on the band’s official Twitter account.

G.R.L. is made up of members Lauren Bennett, Natasha Slayton and Jazzy Mejia. Simone Battle tragically died after committing suicide back in 2014 just as the girl group was moving up the music charts in global superstardom, according to the Mirror.

Someone thought it was funny to hack into Simone’s Twitter account and tweet the hashtag, which was deleted moments later.

One angry fan tweeted, “That tweet is horrifically disgusting, and I sincerely hope that none of the original members posted that.”

Despite being called copycats; Little Mix has been riding high off the success of their new single. Shortly after their performance on The X Factor stage on Sunday night, they take over the U.K. iTunes top spot. Little Mix now sits at No. 1 ahead of James Arthur. It reportedly became the fastest-selling pop song after Adele’s “Hello,” reports the Daily Mail.

Jesy Nelson thanked her fans for their support on Instagram, according to the Chronicle Live.

“Omg I can’t believe this is happening! Thankyou so so much for all the support! We owe everything to you!!! (sic)”

The song is also rumored to include some digs at Perrie Edwards’ famous ex-boyfriend Zayn Malik. On the hot new single, the singer hints that she faked it while having sex with the “Pillowtalk” singer. The morning after on Capital Breakfast with Dave Berry, George, and Lilah, Edwards said that the songwriting and recording process for the song and Little Mix’s forthcoming album has been very “therapeutic.”

“I think the whole album has been like that for us. I feel like we’ve all had therapy on this album. We wrote about everything possible and we’ve been so honest and so open about everything.”
