Scarlett Johansson Will ‘Take Risks’ On A Black Widow Solo Film

Scarlett Johansson has kept Marvel fans buzzing with the news that she is highly invested in creating a standalone Black Widow film franchise, even going so far as sharing her thoughts on possible story arcs. Johansson recently spoke at Variety‘s Power of Women Luncheon, where she advised younger generations of girls and women to go out on a limb and take chances in the pursuit of their dreams. Scarlett seems to be taking her own advice, as she increases her visibility and challenges studio heads to give her the opportunity to bring Black Widow to life in an ambitious solo film.

The Avengers‘ Black Widow Will Get A Standalone Film, Says Scarlett Johansson

Scarlett Johannson wants a Black Widow solo film and she has plenty of ideas for the project from giving the Marvel character a prequel origins film to picking up with Black Widow following the events of The Avengers films.

“She’s got a really rich origins story,” said Johansson. “You can bring it back to Russia. You could explore the Widow program… Or not. It could be something else. Where do the Avengers go? They are underground. What happens then? What happens after it all falls apart? There are so many ways you can go.”

That’s not all talk either. Scarlett told attendees at the Power of Women Luncheon that she has had lengthy conversations with Marvel bosses about bringing Black Widow back, and Ms. Johansson says they have shown great interest.

The problem is that Marvel, like many studios, are still wary of investing in a big-budget female-driven superhero film, especially now, before Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel have yet to premiere in theaters. There’s no telling how audiences will react, and for that reason, Marvel may be putting off a Black Widow feature film.

However, if Marvel wants Scarlett Johansson for the role, they better not wait too long. The Black Widow actress says she’ll only be up for the role for so long.

“I’d have to do it while I still actually wanted to wear a skin-tight catsuit,” Scarlett says. “I don’t know how much longer that’s going to be.”

Scarlett Johansson Advises Women To “Take Risks”

Attending Variety’s Power of Women Luncheon at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Los Angeles, Ms. Johansson advised women to take chances in pursuing their dreams. She was, of course, speaking from experience, having spent a career taking chances and succeeding more often than not, ultimately becoming one of the most recognized actresses in Hollywood.

During her speech, Scarlett revealed that hitting her 30s and having a baby has helped her to connect with herself and to realize that she has finally reached a comfortable place in her life. Johansson said she’s now able to accept herself more fully, easing up on the self-criticism that marked her 20s.

It’s a common belief that with age comes wisdom, and for Scarlett Johansson, that couldn’t be more true. The Black Widow actress is now able to look back and give advice, based on recognizing what has worked for her and what has brought her failure. When asked for her best piece of advice, Scarlett warns aspiring women not to hold back out of fear or uncertainty, but to go forward full throttle.

“I think I would say take risks,” says Johansson. “Take risks and don’t be afraid to fail because the upside of that is just so rewarding … I’ve really built a career on taking risks and sometimes it doesn’t pan out but like I said, the upside has been hugely rewarding.”

Scarlett Johansson added that her success and her fame isn’t remarkable or unattainable for others. She says she is where she is today because she stayed driven and kept working. After 20 years as an actress, Scarlett suggests success had become inevitable.

“I don’t mean to toot my own horn, but it just comes with working for such a long time.”
