WWE News: Mickie James Returning To WWE To Challenge Asuka for NXT Women’s Title

The latest WWE news has the pro wrestling universe excited as former WWE star Mickie James has been confirmed for her return to the WWE. The former Women’s Champion was recently announced to be part of a major match at an upcoming NXT pay-per-view in Toronto. If the return takes place, it will make her first appearance with the company since 2010 when she exited and spent time with TNA, amongst other endeavors.

On Thursday, Cageside Seats reported that Mickie James will return for the NXT Takeover: Toronto event. It was announced on the NXT Twitter account that she will get a major championship match right off the bat. James is set to battle the current NXT Women’s Champion Asuka for the title. It makes for an interesting announcement as the division has been lackluster with Asuka defeating pretty much every female competitor put in the ring with her. Most of those who were even in her league have moved up to WWE’s bigger shows, and it’s expected that Asuka will be doing the same.

As mentioned, James has not wrestled with WWE since 2010. She gained fame in the company originally from a storyline in which she played a psychotic fan obsessed with Trish Stratus. She would go on to become a champion herself, several times over. Over the years she went up against talents such as Trish, Melina, Victoria, and Michelle McCool, among other women’s wrestling stars.

During her final year with the company, she feuded with the women’s stable of LayCool which consisted of Michelle McCool and Layla. There had been rumors that WWE wasn’t happy with Mickie’s body image and wanted to “move in a new direction” with the division. Her storyline with LayCool even featured the duo mocking her as “Piggy James.” However, James still went on to work to help train some of the up-and-coming WWE NXT women’s wrestlers after she finished in the ring.

Mickie spent the majority of her time after leaving WWE wrestling for their competitors, TNA. She won the TNA Knockouts Championship three different times while with the company. She’s also done some work in the music studio, recording two country albums, Strangers & Angels and Somebody’s Gonna Pay.

In 2013, James discussed the possibility of a return to the WWE, as Diva Dirt reported. The women were still referred to divas at the time and James worked with the NXT Divas at the WWE Performance Center. A photo showed her all smiles with current WWE Raw roster member Bayley in front of the wrestling ring. Now it appears that James will make her comeback to where it all started for her.

Ironically, Mickie listed off three women back in 2013 she wanted to work with: Brie Bella, Natalya, and AJ Lee. Unfortunately, only Natalya is with the company as of today. Brie Bella has left to start a family with Daniel Bryan, while AJ Lee left to be with her husband, CM Punk, as he works towards a UFC career. That leaves Natalya, who James said she fought a few matches against before she left WWE. Still, one has to think James wants to grapple with the likes of Charlotte, Sasha Banks, Nikki Bella, and Becky Lynch, among others who are part of the women’s division.

It certainly has WWE fans excited to think of the possibilities. Mickie also has a pair of new championships to compete for, after she battles for the NXT title. It seems like she is in a good spot to win the title from Asuka, which could give the NXT star a reason to move up to the main roster where her talents can be used. Mickie’s wrestling talents and name will also be a big draw, and it has to be a major possibility that she will be on board for a WrestleMania appearance next year.

The NXT Takeover: Toronto pay-per-view will take place on November 19, the same weekend as WWE’s Survivor Series pay-per-view. As reported by Wrestling Inc, it will also feature a main event of Shinsuke Nakamura defending the NXT Championship against former champ Samoa Joe.

WWE fans are you excited for the return of Mickie James to the ring? Will she win the title right away or will it be a few matches before she captures the belt?
