Oregon suspends Blount for rest of 2009

Oregon University has suspended RB LaGarrett Blount for the remainder of the 2009 season for throwing the cowardly sucker punch pictured above and for several other actions taken after last night’s game against Boise State. In time Blount is going to want this sucker punch back as pre punch he was projected as a third round draft pick in the upcoming draft, now he will likely go undrafted.

However this punch and the fact that Blount challenged fans to a fight and apparently tried to get into an altercation with several fans in the stands is why Oregon was forced to suspend him for the rest of the year. Throwing a sucker punch is one thing, challenging the fans is quite another.

What is most disturbing about this incident is the fact that a Police Officer was one of the men trying to hold Blount back. If any one of us sucker punched a guy and then challenged others to a fight we would be arrested not led to the locker room by the Police.

It too bad for Blount who becomes the latest example of athletes thinking they can behave anyway they want and society, this time in the form of the police, confirming that they can. This is a man who cannot control himself and no one would have complained had he been arrested for assaulting a fellow player or threatening the fans.
