‘Divergent’ Actress Shailene Woodley Arrested While Live Streaming Peaceful Dakota Access Pipeline Protest

Divergent actress Shailene Woodley was arrested for “criminal trespassing” while live streaming a peaceful Dakota Access Pipeline protest this afternoon. Woodley live streamed over two hours of footage before things took a turn for the worse. The actress was reportedly being followed and singled out by riot officers due to the 45,000 people she carried with her via her cellphone. Despite hundreds of other protesters standing in the same area as Woodley and despite the fact she was heading to her RV to leave the area, the actress was arrested.

Shailene Woodley was live streaming the Dakota Access Pipeline protest to her Facebook account this afternoon when she was stopped by police officers and arrested.

Woodley had successfully filmed over two hours of live footage showing a peaceful protest being surrounded by police in riot gear. Shailene seemed disgusted early on in the video when she noted that police with weapons and riot gear were present at a protest that consisted mostly of prayer.

“Riot police are arriving at this peaceful protest where people are praying.”

The actress attended the protest with her mother and the two lamented on the live feed that the police presence was “eerie,” noting that they all seemed “out of their element.” Despite the police officers’ appearance, the two noted that “they were pretty cool today.”

“These cops with their helicopter behind them … it’s so eerie, they’re out of their element. But I have to say, they were pretty cool today.”

Unfortunately for Shailene, it seems she spoke too soon and her peaceful protest would land her in jail. After being asked to vacate the premises, the hundreds of protesters began walking back to their vehicles. Woodley was walking back to her RV when she noticed a large police presence around her vehicle. As the actress approaches, she jokes that “some Divergent s*** about to happen.”

She narrates what is happening to the camera, noting that the officers with “giant guns and batons and zip ties” had grabbed her by her jacket and are refusing to let her go.

“Guys, not to make a bad cinema joke, but there’s some Divergent s*** about to happen. I don’t know if you guys just heard me, but I was walking back to my RV, which is right there so that we can go back to camp peacefully and they grabbed me by my jacket and said that I was not allowed to continue. And they had giant guns and batons and zip ties and they’re not letting me go.”

Shailene Woodley is arrested as her mother continues to film the ordeal. During the arrest, Woodley asks why she is being arrested but the police note that “we’re not going to answer any questions right now” claiming only that she was being arrested for “criminal trespassing.” Shailene presses further, asking why she is the only one being arrested when there are hundreds of other people standing in the exact same area. She is provided no answer.

As the young actress is being toted away by police officers, Woodley shouts back to the camera that she is only being arrested because of the 40,000 people watching her live feed.

“All right, I’m being arrested. Because I was trespassing like everyone … it’s because I’m well known. It’s because I have 40,000 people watching. So everybody knows … we were going to our vehicle which they had all surrounded and waiting for me with giant guns and a giant truck behind them just so they could arrest me. I hope you’re watching, mainstream media.”
