Bret Easton Ellis Isn’t Happy About Losing ‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’ Adaptation

Bret Easton Ellis really wanted to write the big screen adaptation of E.L. James erotic novel Fifty Shades of Grey, a job that ultimately went to Kelly Marcel. Since Ellis isn’t one to hold back his feelings, particularly when he isn’t happy about something, it didn’t take long for the author to weigh in on Universal’s decision to hire someone else for the job.

According to the folks at Zap2It, the American Psycho author took to Twitter to discuss his displeasure with Universal’s choice to adapt Fifty Shades of Grey.

“Kelly Marcel?!? KELLY MARCEL?!? Kelly Marcel is WRITING the script for “Fifty Shades of Grey”?!? THIS is the movie they want to make? ARGH,” Ellis wrote. “Kelly Marcel: the creator of (gulp) ‘Terra Nova’ and a Mary Poppins bio-pic has been blessed by EL James and no one can stop her. Dear God.”

In addition to creating Terra Nova, VH1 points out that Kelly Marcel also founded the Bad Dog Theater Company in London with The Dark Knight Rises villain Tom Hardy. Could this mean that Bane himself will tackle the role of Christian Grey in the upcoming adaptation? At this point, it’s really anybody’s guess who will end up playing the coveted part.

According to E! News, Bret Easton Ellis’ comments spurred Fifty Shades of Grey producer Dana Brunetti to attack the author for coming down on Kelly Marcel. As a result, a Twitter feud between those who agreed with Ellis and those who simply aren’t a fan of the author’s work.

“Really, Bret? The day you release that ‘trailer’. School film? You’re losing it,” Brunetti said, referencing the grindhouse-style teaser for Ellis’ The Canyons that recently popped up online.

By the time Fifty Shades of Grey finally makes it to the big screen, chances are most people are going to be extremely tired of hearing about the film. The amount of attention the adaptation is currently receiving could ultimately hurt the film’s box office performance in the long run.

Do you agree with Bret Easton Ellis that Kelly Marcel is the wrong choice to pen Fifty Shades of Grey?
