Wes Welker Clarifies Statement About Wanting To “Stick It In Bill’s Face”

New England wide receiver Wes Welker had 13 catches for 104 yards in the Patriots 31-21 victory over the Denver Broncos on Sunday. The strong performance should have put an end to rumors about weather or not Welker was in head coach Bill Belichick’s doghouse, but Welker’s comments after the game only added fuel to the fire.

”Yeah, it’s kind of nice to stick it in Bill’s face once in a while,” Wes Welker said after the game, in an interview with Comcast SportsNet. Welker said the comment with a wink, but it was well reported, fanning the flames of rumors of dissent within the Patriots’ organization.

Fox News reports that Welker clarified his statement, saying it was nothing but a joke.

“You’ve just got to be careful with what you say,” Welker said. ”And Bill does a good job of challenging us and being a great coach and doing the things necessary that he needs to do. I made a joke about it, you know, won’t happen again.”

For his part, Belichick was his usual straight to the point self. Reporters tried to ask him about it on Monday, but the coach had little to say.

“You should ask (Welker) about it then, what he meant by it. I don’t know,” Belichick said, according to NFL.com.

Welker did not say whether or not he discussed the comments he made with his coach, but said they have a good relationship.

Wes Welker, caught more passes over the past five seasons than any other player in the NFL and signed a one-year deal worth $9.5 million rather than negotiate a long-term deal with the Patriots, leading to rumors of dissension.
