Twenty One Pilots Gearing Up For ‘SNL’ Debut This Weekend

Twenty One Pilots will be the musical guest on SNL this weekend, marking their debut on the live sketch comedy show. Twenty One Pilots announced the appearance via Twitter last week.

Guest Lin-Manuel Miranda of the Broadway hit Hamilton is set to host, but SNL is more than likely counting on Twenty One Pilots to draw in viewers. While Lin-Manuel Miranda is well-known among theater geeks and, according to Billboard, is just the O shy of having the EGOT, TOP has a huge following on social media and their music videos have garnered more than sixty million views a piece. Even Miranda took to social media to show how pumped he was at working with Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun.

A series of promo ads were released yesterday by SNL featuring Twenty One Pilot’s Josh Dun and Tyler Joseph along with Miranda and SNL cast member Aidy Bryant.

While Lin-Manuel Miranda and the cast of Hamilton have been receiving rave reviews and accolades, Twenty One Pilots has been making their own mark in the entertainment industry with chart topping singles and a world tour that has been dubbed a “must-see.” Just a couple of months ago, Twenty One Pilots made headlines for achieving a Billboard feat only previous achieved by Elvis and the Beatles when TOP had two singles in the Top 5 at the same time. Last month, another Twenty One Pilots single shot up the charts too which may make fans wonder what two songs TOP will choose to perform on their SNL debut.

The pairing of Twenty One Pilots with Lin-Manuel Miranda seems a bit like a lost opportunity. Last week’s host was Margot Robbie, star of Suicide Squad in which the Twenty One Pilots song “Heathens” found humongous success. One would think that SNL would’ve considered booking Robbie with the group that helped promote the movie. Regardless, Twenty One Pilots fans are sure to tune in to see what antics Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun come up with.

The TOP live show is said to be one of the most creative and energetic experiences on the music scene. Joseph is known to frequently crowd surf. Dun is known to perform acrobatic flips. Costumes, paint, and anything that comes to the imagination of Twenty One Pilots is possible during a live performance.

That being said, the SNL stage and venue is quite small. It will be interesting to see how the Pilots adjust a stadium performance to fit a quaint venue. Of course, the duo has made adjustments in the past with performances on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and Conan but both of those were last year before Twenty One Pilots was in the throws of the tremendous success they’ve experienced in 2016.

The other thing Pilots fans will be looking for is to see if Joseph and Dun go beyond just performing their music and join in the comedy festivities of SNL sketches. Tyler and Josh seem to enjoy pranks, humor, and theatrics as much as they enjoy putting out their music and the talented two may want to lend a hand to the SNL cast. The video for the TOP hit “Stressed Out” even shows the fun-loving Joseph and Dun riding around on adult sized Big Wheels.

And pranking was a prevalent theme when Twenty One Pilots was touring two years ago with Panic at the Disco and Fall Out Boy, with all three bands frequently playing practical jokes on each other on stage during performances. If SNL doesn’t use their natural ability to poke fun at life, it seems like the writers will miss their mark. After all, if Justin Bieber can do it, why not Twenty One Pilots?
