‘The Vampire Diaries’ Season 8: Has Ian Somerhalder Confirmed Nina Dobrev’s Refusal?
Vampire Diaries fans have long been expecting Nina Dobrev’s return in Season 8 as Elena Gilbert. However, Ian Somerhalder thinks otherwise.
Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev dated when the latter was a part of The CW’s supernatural drama. When the duo ended their relationship, many believed that sooner or later they would reconcile. However, things changed completely when Somerhalder got married to Twilight alum Nikki Reed.
The Vampire Diaries Season 6 was the last season of the show where fans got to see Dobrev portraying her character. Fans of TVD, however, got a little surprise when they got to hear her voice in the finale episode of Season 7.
Ever since it was announced that The CW has decided not to renew The Vampire Diaries, fans have had high hope for Dobrev’s official return to the show.
Many fans are expecting some romantic reunion between Damon and Elena, the two beloved characters portrayed by Somerhalder and Dobrev. The former, however, does not wish that.
During his recent conversation with TV Line, the Lost alum talked about Dobrev’s official return to the show.
“This poor young girl from this tiny town… she lost everyone she’s ever loved, she burned her house down, she’s now in a box. These guys have ruined her life, yet everybody wants her to end up with one of them.”
Apparently, this is not the first time Somerhalder has talked about Dobrev’s return or refusal to come back.
After Nina’s departure from the show, Ian stayed focused on his career and personal life. During an earlier interview with Variety, he talked about his take on the actress’ decision to quit the show.
“I personally think everyone thought it was going to be a huge departure after Elena (Nina Dobrev) was gone. And I was one of those people. I thought it was going to be a huge departure for the typical formula of our show. By virtue of the fact that it wasn’t a huge leap for mankind, as far as changing it up, there were some differences that sort of mixed up the formula.”
After his interview with Variety, there were reports that the actor seemed to praise everyone’s work in a great effort to appear humble, but his intentions were clear that he enjoyed the new attention and focus his character was getting.
Meanwhile, it has been reported that if the actress decides to make a comeback, then she will have more screen time with Paul Wesley instead of sharing intense scenes with her ex-boyfriend.
According to Celeb Dirty Laundry, if these speculations are correct, then there’s a chance that fans will get to see less of Somerhalder and more of Wesley, as the network will want to give Dobrev plenty of attention.

Dobrev has successfully made the transition from the small screen to the big screen. With films like xXx: Return of Xander Cage, Arrivals, and Crash Pads in the pipeline, the Bulgarian actress has done pretty well for herself. Furthermore, it would be extremely difficult for her to spare a few weeks to shoot her portion of TVD.
Apart from her busy schedule, the actress has already made it clear that she is done portraying any character in The Vampire Diaries. During her chat with Interview Magazine, she stated that the decision to leave the show was not spontaneous, as she was clear from the very beginning about her time on the show.
“I made the difficult decision last season to leave. I had decided years before that I’d go the run of my contract and I wouldn’t extend, but it was a surprise for everyone else that didn’t know that. I always knew that I’d signed up for a certain amount of time and I fulfilled it. I had a great experience, but everything has to come to an end and this was my time. It’s like high school, you do four years and then you move onto the college.”
