Bangladesh takes on England in the first One Day International of a cricket series that almost didn’t happen, a match that will live stream Friday to open what now promises to be one of the most exciting ODI trilogies in years and the start of a new rivalry between two teams whose fortunes in the 50-overs format have skyrocketed since the 2015 Cricket World Cup early last year.
In fact, it was Bangladesh who inflicted one of the most disheartening defeats in England’s white ball cricket history, eliminating England from the World Cup tournament in the group stage — as the Tigers then advanced to the knockout round for the first time.
While the loss was dispiriting for England, the win was inspirational for Bangladesh — the greatest victory in the country’s cricketing history. Bangladesh were eliminated in the World Cup quarterfinals by India but since then have played 16 ODI matches and won 14 of them, including series victories over India, Pakistan, and South Africa.
England have also seen a resurgence, taking an aggressive and positive approach, in a break with England tradition, under one-day Captain Eoin Morgan.
But Morgan will be absent from the Bangladesh series, electing to stay home due to the same worries about security and terrorism that nearly scuttled the entire England tour. Wicketkeeper Jos Buttler takes over the skipper’s reins.
But without Morgan or batsman Alex Hales, who also took a pass with security concerns, as well as resting Joe Root, injured pacer Mark Wood, and Chris Jordan who was simply left out of the side, England come into the ODI series as surprising underdogs.
