Sami Zayn Reveals His Desire To Fight Brock Lesnar

The list of guys who want to face Brock Lesnar in the WWE ring is quite long: Kevin Owens, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Bobby Lashley, and Daniel Bryan have all expressed their desire to go one-on-one with the former UFC and WWE World Heavyweight Champion. Now, you can add one more name to that list, as former NXT Champion Sami Zayn said on the Wrestling Compadres Slamcast that he would love to get in the ring with Lesnar, and that he believes that the two of them could create a “compelling match.”

“Obviously Brock has done his damage, I’m sure I can get a good shot or two, and I believe it’s all about putting on a compelling match, and I believe that would happen with the two of us.”

Sami Zayn’s name has never come up in any of the “Brock Lesnar’s next opponent” conversations. But, that’s not because he wouldn’t be able to, as he said, create a compelling match between himself and Lesnar, it’s more because WWE really hasn’t given him a main event level push.

One of the benefits of the brand extension is that guys — like Zayn — who haven’t gotten an opportunity to be at the top of the card on WWE’s main roster will now get that opportunity due to the lack of depth on both rosters. As of this writing, Zayn hasn’t been given a shove to the top, but according to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE is planning on having the former NXT Champion be a main event player in the future.

You may be wondering how WWE is planning on making Zayn a main event star. Well, their idea is to book him like they booked Daniel Bryan, which means that he’ll lose the majority of his matches. The idea is that the constant losses will rile the fans up and make them organically get behind Zayn like they got behind Bryan. The only problem is, WWE didn’t try to make Daniel Bryan a star by beating him every week. In fact, they were trying to do just the opposite, and the fans picked up on it, which is why he became so popular. Will beating Zayn every single week help get him over? Maybe. We don’t know yet. But if it does, maybe we’ll see WWE put him in the ring with his dream opponent — Brock Lesnar.

In the aforementioned interview on the Wrestling Compadres Slamcast, Zayn compared facing Lesnar to facing Kevin Owens, saying that he’s been “beat up” by Owens in the past, so getting beaten up even by a guy like Lesnar, wouldn’t be anything new to him.

“I’ve been beat up pretty badly back in my day. I have been in the ring with Kevin Owens for about 12 years, I’m used to getting beat up.”

Would a Brock Lesnar vs. Sami Zayn match be great? In a perfect world, sure. But, as Kyle Johnson of the Wrestling Observer pointed out, some WWE fans are getting tired of Brock Lesnar’s “Suplex City” shtick, and a match between he and Zayn would probably be filled with German Suplexes, ground and pound, and an F-5 for the finish. Zayn would probably be lucky to mount any offense at all in the match. So that’s why, in a perfect world, where Zayn would be allowed to be somewhat competitive with Lesnar, a match between the two would be great.

Should you expect to see Sami Zayn vs. Brock Lesnar any time soon? No. In fact, Lesnar will probably face several guys, including Kevin Owens, Chris Jericho, Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, Shane McMahon, and Goldberg before WWE even considers booking him against Zayn. So, even though it’s a match that Zayn really wants to have, you shouldn’t expect to see it any time soon.
