‘Gears of War 4’ Demands Massive 11GB Day 1 Patch, Pre-Load On PC Live

Pre-ordered Gears of War 4? Prepare your bandwidth for this massive Day One patch for the Xbox One.

With better and badder graphics come great responsibilities: and this time around, it’s 11 whopping gigabytes of download if you’re getting the physical disc copy of Gears of War 4.

As with many AAA titles of this generation, huge games like Gears of War 4 will require those who purchase the physical copy a tremendous amount of time, patience, and bandwidth before one can start playing. Rod Fergusson, Studio Head at Gears of War 4’s developer The Coalition, clarified in a tweet earlier today that the Day 1 11-GB patch for Gears of War is mandatory only for those who purchased the title physically. Those buying Gears of War 4 digitally, all the gigs are completed upon initial download.

The Xbox One port of Gears of War 4 totals 54.6 GB. The day one patch for huge games like Gears of War 4, Fallout 4, and Halo: The Master Chief Collection, among others, are compulsory because standard Blu-ray discs are currently limited to 50 GB storage. Well, at least some titles, like Final Fantasy XV, is taking their customer’s bandwidth into consideration by delaying the release of the title to include the supposed Day 1 patch into the physical disc, reports Gadgets 360. Well, it’s either they’re being immensely considerate or it’s just a scapegoat for delaying the release of Final Fantasy XV yet again.

If you’ve purchased Gears of War 4 for your PC, however, the whole game is at a massive 73.3 GB,VG 247 reports. As of writing, pre-load for Gears of War 4 is already live so you can get your PCs up and running to prepare for the launch of Gears of War 4. Pre-loading for the Windows 10 version of Gears of War 4 will require at least 80 GB of free storage space.

If you opt not to pre-load Gears of War 4 before the release, take note that the download will still start automatically in the background upon release but it will run at a slower rate than at pre-load. The newest Windows 10 update is also needed for this type of download.

The Coalition posted a step-by-step pre-load instructions at the Gears of War forums last Thursday.

Step 1: Download The New Windows Update
All Windows 10 players are strongly encouraged to download the new Windows update (September 29, 2016 – KB3194496) immediately before pre-downloading Gears of War 4. This update fixes an issue which could cause your game download to restart.

If you aren’t sure what version of Windows 10 you have, follow these 3 simple steps:

  1. Hit the Windows Key + R
  2. Type Winver in the run command text box and hit OK
  3. Look at the dialog screen revealing the OS build and registration info
  4. The version you should see is Version 1607, OS Build 14393.222.

If your Windows 10 Version and OS Build numbers do not match the above, follow these steps to download the latest version:

  1. Open your Settings app
  2. Select Windows Update
  3. Click “Check for Updates”
  4. Install the available Windows Update
  5. Restart your PC

Step 2: Pre-Load the game

  1. Open the Windows Store app
  2. Search for Gears of War 4
  3. Select the edition of the game you have pre-ordered, or pre-order your edition of choice
  4. Click Install to begin your download

Downloading Gears of War 4 digitally on the PC has a lot of perks. Apart from not having to go through the trouble of downloading extra GBs on top of going out of your way to secure a physical copy of the game, getting Gears of War 4 on Windows 10 gives you the Xbox One version for free via the new Xbox Play Anywhere. How neat!

Windows Central reports that Gears of War4 officially disengages on October 11 on Xbox One and Windows 10 PC.
