‘Taken 2’ Tops Box Office

Liam Neeson’s new movie Taken 2 didn’t win over too many critics, but it did take the box office crown this weekend.

Taken 2, which currently has a 20 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, brought in an estimated $50 million this weekend.

The Miami Herald reports that the first Taken movie brought in $24.7 million during its opening weekend. Box office experts predicted that the sequel, despite horrible reviews, would top the original with about $38 million during its opening weekend.

Taken 2 ended up surpassing expectations to top the weekend’s box office.

The Observer writes:

“There is virtually no plot, just a succession of screeching chases and absurdly violent fights, some risible sleuthing and a great deal of talking on mobiles.”

The animated hit Hotel Transylvania, which set a record for September box office results last week, came in second this weekend with $26.3 million.

The musical Pitch Perfect brought in $14.7 million.

Looper, the time traveling thriller with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis, finished in fourth during its second weekend with $12.2 million.

Tim Burton’s latest movie, Frankenweenie, finished fifth with $11.5 million.

Official box office numbers will be available on Monday.
