Harry Styles’ Hiatus Remarks: Why The One Direction Hiatus ‘Is Good’?

Harry Styles’ hiatus remarks puzzled Fans. Some are encouraged, while others are discouraged. Most are unsure. Styles admitted that he was unsure what the future holds for the band. Harry’s interview with Another Man left many wondering what it all means. The Mirror quotes Harry’s interview when asked whether the band will get back together:

“I don’t know. When we started people always asked ‘where do you think you’ll be in five years? People always ask, right? It’s a difficult question to answer. I would never say we’ll never do anything again but it’s good for us to be exploring different things.”

The One Direction hiatus is good for the band. It is very good that they are exploring other things. All the boys have chosen vastly different paths for their hiatus, but all except one has decided to make a solo album.

Harry Styles has been very career-minded. Styles is currently working on a solo album, one of three he is under contract to create. He’s also made the movie Dunkirk and is planning a second film in which he will portray Mick Jagger. This is a movie that could skyrocket Harry’s career and mature his image.

One Direction’s Niall Horan has traveled the world, played a lot of golf, and is preparing to make his solo album. Niall is also suffering from severe acid reflux disease, which is a risk to his vocal chords. It would not be a good idea for Niall to have any major added stress right now, and he needs to relax.

Like Harry Styles, hiatus is great for Liam Payne, who is currently working on a solo album. Liam is also taking time to be with Cheryl. They are said to be planning a family. There is some speculation that Cheryl is pregnant, but if not, the rumor is strong that she and Liam would like to be.

One Direction’s Louis Tomlinson is spending a lot of time with his son, and trying to sort out his girlfriend Danielle Campbell and his baby’s mother Briana Jungwirth, according to Us Magazine. The two women are alleged to be perpetually feuding. Louis is also managing an all-girl band. He does not seem to be making a solo album, unless he is recording secretly in his basement.

Harry Styles’ hiatus statement, that the hiatus is “good for us,” is very true in that way. It is good for the boys to have some time to relax, pursue other projects, and be with their loved ones. Liam, Niall, and Louis were no doubt exhausted and burned out from the pressures of being on the road for five years. Harry went on to say that it is better to get back together when the boys are ready, no matter how long that takes.

“Maybe at some point, everyone will want to do something again but it is better if it happens naturally. It’s the most important, the greatest thing that ever happened to me, being in that band. It completely changed my life.”

One Direction was a different sort of band than most bands that last. The truth is, from the beginning 1D was not expected to last five years. Boy bands, rarely make the three-year mark, at least not with continuing success. Therefore, boy bands generally tour longer each year, produce albums faster and keep up an insane pace for a short period of time. It is a make the money while you can sort of plan.

One Direction did last, though, and while Harry Styles and the rest of they guys are thrilled about that, they want to ensure that success is built on a firm foundation of musical skills, quality albums, a more mature image, and a sane schedule that isn’t going to completely exhaust them again.

Harry Styles’ hiatus time is about building the skills to forge a career that will last. If the band does get back together, they will have to do things differently. They will need to hone their skills, spend more time in the studio, make higher quality music, and devise ways to keep from getting burned out while touring. This will probably include cutting back on the tour schedule.

The One Direction hiatus, coupled with making those solo albums, will improve the quality of the music. Harry, Liam, and Niall are learning how to make albums in a more creative way that doesn’t involve rushing through and implementing some sort of short cut formula.

Harry Styles’ hiatus has been little more than very hard work, but the others have taken long breaks. That break is helping some of the others to recover from their burnout. Burnout can occur in just about any field, even music. It usually happens when someone is doing something they really love so much that they are unaware of what it is doing to their health or state of mind until they are either sick or nearly sick.

The One Direction hiatus is giving those boys who are exhausted a chance to recover and also to live a bit of normal life before they commit to touring again. It also gives the boys time apart to rediscover themselves.

The One Direction hiatus was never intended to be over this soon. Initially, they said one or two years, and it hasn’t even been nine months. Give them time.

Harry Styles, Liam Payne, and Niall Horan were extremely young when they first went on the road with One Direction. Harry hadn’t even finished high school. The boys have grown up on the road, and that just isn’t very healthy when one considers how hard they worked and how little time they had to explore their other interests. The boys need time.
