‘Game Of Thrones’: Tyrion Could Be Much More Important Than It Currently Appears

Game of Thrones has captivated viewers for many reasons. It has so many layers, amazing battle scenes, a great story, characters we love to hate, characters we cheer for — in short, we’re invested in the show. As the HBO hit nears its end (only two more seasons!), fans are discussing theories even more frantically, hoping to figure out how prophecies will play out, what will come of their favorite characters, and, of course, who will win the game of thrones and sit on that coveted Iron Throne when all is said and done.

One of the Game of Thrones characters that has come to be loved by many viewers is Tyrion Lannister. When the show began, we weren’t sure what to make of him. Did we love him or hate him? He was a boozing, promiscuous, rude member of the royal Lannisters. Since then, he has cleaned up his act a little. We don’t see him sleeping around anymore, but he does still enjoy his alcohol.

Tyrion Lannister has become a Game of Thrones fan favorite but has always been mostly seen as playing a sort of secondary role in the grand scheme of things. He is the Hand to the powerful Daenerys Targaryen and was the “imp” brother of the royal Cersei and Jaime Lannister. He’s hated by Cersei, was hated by his father, and in general was looked down upon by almost everyone before he met Daenerys. But there’s a theory that Tyrion is much more important to Game of Thrones and the future of Westeros than anyone has imagined.

Let’s go all the way back to Season 1 of Game of Thrones first. He looked different back then. Do you remember? Check out the video below.

In Season 1, Tyrion’s hair was much lighter. There were some scenes in which it was practically white. In the George R.R. Martin books, his hair is very light. So what? So the description of his hair in the Game of Thrones books is very reminiscent of the unique color of Daenerys and Viserys Targaryen’s hair. It’s a trademark physical quality of the family. This is one thing that has led many to believe that Tyrion is not really a Lannister, but instead is a Targaryen. Need more convincing?

Remember the Game of Thrones episode when he killed his father, Tywin Lannister? Tywin said something very interesting that could be a hint that another fan theory is true. Check it out.

Tywin says a couple of times in the scene that Tyrion is his son, but after being shot, at about 2:30 in the video, he says, “You’re no son of mine.” He could have said it in anger, but it could also be one of those Game of Thrones scenes where a seemingly unimportant statement reveals an important truth. Consider the following.

Tywin Lannister was married to Joanna. Mad king Aerys was infatuated with her, even after she married Tywin, according to the books upon which Game of Thrones is based.

Winter is Coming digs into a theory about this love triangle and explains that this was a constant source of conflict between Tywin and Aerys. What if Aerys had his way with Joanna at some point and fathered Tyrion? It would explain a few things, including why Game of Thrones says that Tywin smiled only in Joanna’s presence. If he was so in love with her, why wouldn’t he adore Tyrion? Jaime can’t father an heir to the throne because of his service in the Kingsguard, so Tyrion is the only one who can carry on his name. Why would he hate him so? Yes, Joanna died giving birth to him, but there may be more to it.

Take a look at this from A Storm of Swords.

“Men’s laws give you the right to bear my name and display my colors, since I cannot prove that you are not mine. To teach my humility, the gods have condemned me to watch you waddle about wearing that proud lion that was my father’s sigil and his father’s before him. But neither gods nor men shall compel me to turn Casterly Rock into your whorehouse.”

One more thing that supports this theory. Look at one more scene.

This was a great scene with Tyrion handling the dragons perfectly. But according to Game of Thrones lore, this is something that only Targaryens are supposed to be able to do. He has talked about his lifelong fascination with dragons in previous episodes, so maybe it isn’t just a crazy theory after all.

What could this mean? Well, there’s a Game of Thrones prophecy about the Three-Headed Dragon. One person will ride each of the three heads, and it’s presumed they will be Targaryens. We know Dany is Targaryen, and the R+L=J theory has proven to be true, making Jon Snow part Targaryen. And if Tyrion is also Targaryen, he could be the third head of the dragon.

It would be so satisfying to so many Game of Thrones fans if Tyrion ended up playing such a significant role in the endgame. He’s been overlooked and undervalued by many people, so to see him like this would be amazing.

Alas, we’ll have to wait and see how it all plays out. We don’t have a date for the return of Game of Thrones, but it will likely be the summer of 2017.
