‘WWE Clash Of Champions’ Matches: Five Titles On The Line

WWE has decided to replace Night of Champions with Clash of Champions. Though the name has changed, the concept of the pay per view remains the same. Five championships will be on the line on Sunday night, as reported by Fox Sports. World Wrestling Entertainment is hoping that the gimmick draws for their Raw brand.

Interestingly enough, Clash of Champions was invented by the NWA, once a bitter rival of WWE, because they wanted to gain revenge on Vince McMahon, who had a tendency to attack pay per view events by those that he competed against. The National Wrestling Alliance decided to put on a show the same day as Wrestlemania IV.

For weeks now, WWE has been building up Nia Jax, who happens to be related to Dwayne Johnson, as a sizable threat to the Divas division. She has defeated various women. On the kickoff show, Jax will be facing Alicia Fox, the veteran that is expected to provide the newcomer with some credibility.

Another veteran that is expected to put over a newer performer at WWE Clash of Champions is Chris Jericho. The former world heavyweight champion is scheduled for a match against Sami Zayn. The former NXT star needs to be built up for a potential program against Kevin Owens.

Over the past couple of weeks, Antonio Cesaro and Sheamus have been engaged in a Best of Seven series. Predictably, Sheamus won the first three match, which put the baby face Cesaro in the underdog position of trying to turn the tide around, which is more than likely going to happen at Clash of Champions.

Brian Kendricks, who made his return to WWE after years of being away, will more than likely join Chris Jericho and Alicia Fox as veteran performers who put over newer wrestlers. He is scheduled to face TJ Perkins, the former TNA star who won the Cruiserweight Challenge, at Clash of Champions.

For weeks now, Roman Reigns has been working a program with Rusev and Lana. The reason for that is because WWE has been trying to keep Reigns away from the main event program so that fans will not be as disgruntled with him as before. Rusev is expected to pick up the victory at Clash of Champions.

New Day is still one of the more entertaining acts in WWE, but they need someone to step up and challenge them in the eyes of the fans. Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows have yet to do that, so management might keep the belt on the proven commodities instead of switching over to Anderson at Gallows at Clash of Champions.

Since no one has actually captured the Divas division in WWE, any one of the three competitors at Clash of Champions could realistically walk away from the pay per view as the champion. Charlotte has already shown what she can. Sasha Banks has given a brief preview. Bayley is the new girl on the block, so she might have the best chance at winning the match.

Kevin Owens and Seth Rollins are involved in the main event of Clash of Champions. The WWE Universal Championship is on the line. Owens has been solid as a champion, but he has not exactly dominated the audience like WWE had hoped. Rollins is a proven commodity, so management might opt to put the belt back on him to see if he can improve the numbers.

Clash of Champions should be an interesting event for WWE this weekend. It might not be the most successful event in the history of the company, but it does not have to be because it is a part of the WWE Network.
