‘How To Get Away With Murder’ Season 3 Spoilers: Episode 1 Recap—Which Character Dies?

The season premiere of How to Get Away with Murder started off with a bang—literally. The show is massively popular among fans and critics alike. Rotten Tomatoes scores the series at 86 percent, and the site describes why How to Get Away with Murder is such a hit.

“The brilliant, charismatic and seductive Professor Annalise Keating gets entangled with four law students from her class ‘How to Get Away with Murder.’ Little do they know that they will have to apply what they learned to real life, in this masterful, sexy, suspense-driven legal thriller.”

In the first season of How to Get Away with Murder, the major question was, who killed Lila and Sam? The big question in the second season was, who killed Annalise and Rebecca? Not since The Shield have audiences asked so frequently, are they really going to get away with all of this? But it looks like the third season of How to Get Away with Murder is going to provide the biggest hook yet.

For those that need a refresher course of the first two seasons, the cast provides some entertaining recaps in the videos below.

In true How to Get Away with Murder fashion, the third season provides plenty of flashbacks. The episode starts off where the last season ended, with sleazy Wallace Mahoney being shot in the head in front of awkward Wes. Wes gets questioned by some detectives, and then gets in the car with Annalise. The duo then head to the woods where they scream their stresses away.

The series then jumps to four months later; Wes is driving around awkwardly on his bike for the first day of school. He’s greeted by Laurel and acts discomfited by her. The Keating clan all reunite in class and Annalise enters.

Annalise welcomes everyone to her new class, Criminal Law Legal Clinic. The students are handpicked and informed that they are not just students, but practicing attorneys. They will be working on pro bono cases for clients who can’t afford an attorney. And then everyone, including Annalise, looks disturbed as they notice a picture mysteriously on the chalkboard. The photo is of Annalise with the word “killer” written over it. She plays it off by stating that it must be a student that’s upset, but everyone knows better.

The class’s first case is an Iraqi immigrant who faces deportation because he was busted for possession of marijuana. It turns out the Iraqi father took the rap for his daughter. To no fault of their own, the class loses the case—but on with the real juicy stuff.

In the How to Get Away with Murder season premiere, it’s revealed that Annalise has a secret phone that she uses to text an unknown person. It’s eventually revealed that she’s texting a man that she has tailing Frank. She is on the phone with the mysterious man when he asks, “Do-or-die time, what do you want me to do?” But just as Annalise is about to answer, Frank sneaks up on his stalker and puts a knife to his throat. It’s unclear if he kills him or not. Understandably, Annalise starts freaking out.

A series of flashbacks show what the Keating clan were up to during the summer. Laurel said goodbye to Annalise and took a trip to Mexico, and Annalise accuses Laurel of taking Frank with her. Laurel denies this and pledges her allegiance to Annalise by saying, “He is dead to me.” But apparently, he’s not that dead to her because later it’s revealed that she is constantly calling Frank and leaving him messages.

Connor asks Annalise to not hire his boyfriend Oliver and she promises him that she won’t. Of course, she ends up hiring him. She tells Connor she did this because Oliver can hack into her system if she doesn’t. Oliver and Connor end up getting into an argument, and Connor gets dumped. Asher is broke since his mom cut him off because she blames him for his father’s suicide. And in one of the more comical moments of the episode, Annalise states to her group of murderous students that, “We’re good people now.”

It turns out that Wes has been weird towards Laurel because every time he looks at her, all he sees is Frank. That’s nice, the awkward one kills Sam, and Laurel is the first to get his back. He’s more than happy to hook up with her, but all of a sudden he sees Frank in her.

But the ending was the real kicker. In a fast-forward scene, Annalise is outside her house, which is on fire, and an ambulance is placing a dead body on a gurney. She is shown the body and Annalise is a wreck. Then the narrator gives some insight as to what viewers can expect during Season 3 of How to Get Away with Murder; each episode this season will reveal who is not dead until they finally reveal who is dead.

The premiere episode of the third season offered the usual: slow reveals, only two expressions from Wes, a riveting hook, and more questions asked than answered. But strangely, there was an absence of superfluous sex; well, maybe next episode. Regardless of whom the dead person is, or why they are dead, one thing is for certain: How to Get Away with Murder Season 3 will continue to hook viewers.
