‘Gears Of War 4’ Launch Trailer Hits With Potential Spoilers Aplenty

Gears of War 4 is just three weeks from launch on the Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs. Microsoft and The Coalition released the official launch trailer for the third-person shooter Monday and, if you care about not having the campaign story spoiled, you may want to skip it for now.

Those that don’t care about spoilers can watch on freely and without worry. You can, in fact, start speculating whether certain things that happen during the Gears of War 4 trailer portend the death of major franchise characters along with how much a certain excitable character may actually appear in the game. Speaking of which, where is what’s his name?

The Coalition jumps the series’ universe forward by 25 years with Gears of War 4. The new entry takes place over one night as the official description teases.

“25 years ago, Marcus Fenix and Delta Squad made Sera safe for tomorrow’s generation. His son JD has lived with that peace, until now. A new threat called the Swarm has emerged and now JD, along with his friends Del and Kait, must fight together and survive the night.”

Marcus Fenix returns as a playable character in Gears of War 4, though JD is the primary for players. Co-op players will be able to choose Del, Kait, Marcus, or potentially other guest characters in the four-man squad.

It’s unclear how much Old Man Marcus will appear in Gears of War 4, but he obviously has a huge role to play as JD’s father. The younger Fenix and Del have abandoned the COG government for reasons not yet known and somehow end up in Kait’s village that is run outside the influence of COG. JD and Del run to Marcus for help after Kait’s village is attacked and her mother abducted, but also end up with the COG on their tail, and must not only face the Swarm, but the robotic DeeBees as well.

The music in the trailer is another cover song of a classic tune, per the Gears of War tradition. This time, it is Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters” performed by American singer and songwriter Lissie.

Meanwhile, the Gears of War 4 launch trailer will also debut on television tonight during the Monday Night Football broadcast on ESPN between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Chicago Bears. The game starts at 8:30 p.m. ET / 5:30 p.m. PT, so football fans concerned about potential spoilers may want to tune out during the commercial breaks.

Gears of War 4 is due out October 11 for the Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs. The title is part of Microsoft’s new Play Anywhere program where a digital purchase from the Xbox Store and Windows Store comes with a copy of Gears of War 4 for both platforms. It also supports cross-saves and cross-play between platforms for The Coalition’s title.

The Xbox Play Anywhere initiative went live in a recent console update and the Windows 10 Anniversary update. ReCore was the first title released on September 13, followed by Forza Horizon 3 on September 27, and then Gears of War 4.

Those that purchase the $100 Gears of War 4 Ultimate or the $250 Collector’s Edition will also get to play the game four days earlier on Friday, October 7. There is also the 2TB Xbox One S Limited Edition releasing on October 6 for $450 that comes with early access to the shooter as well.
