Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez have formed one of the longest lasting friendships in the entertainment industry, a world where all too frequently friends become frenemies overnight. But not Taylor and her best buddy, who have supported each other through boyfriends, tours, successes, and failures. Now, as Selena reportedly struggles to overcome both physical and emotional problems that include her former boyfriend Justin Bieber, Swift is stepping up to comfort her friend.

Getting by with some help from friends like Taylor, Gomez is suffering from a flare-up of lupus, an autoimmune disease that also has resulted in emotional issues, reported Hollywood Life, which cited a source describing how Swift has been there for the “Kill ‘Em with Kindness” singer.
“Selena is keeping life very simple and slow while she recovers and recharges from life,” shared the insider. “She has been staying in contact with a few of only her closest friends, including Taylor.”
Swift has been providing her pal with “words of encouragement via text” and has been getting support in return, with Taylor suffering her own issues after that shocking breakup from her now-ex-boyfriend Tom Hiddleston.
But Swift reportedly is not the only one struggling after a breakup. Even though it’s been significantly longer since Gomez and Justin ended their off-again, on-again romantic relationship, Bieber continues to play a key role in the pop princess’ life, an insider told Us Weekly.
“She can be fragile emotionally and Justin is a major factor.”
The “Kill ‘Em with Kindness” singer and Bieber battled on social media recently, and Us links that battle to the influence that Justin continues to have on Selena.
However, in her statement on her tour cancellation, Justin’s ex-girlfriend explained that it was due to emotional issues related to her autoimmune disease, clarifying that she has decided to take a hiatus to cope with “panic attacks and depression.”
But is something beyond that causing Taylor’s best friend to struggle?

An insider told In Touch that Bieber served as a catalyst for his former girlfriend’s problems, with photos of Justin and his new gal pal, Sofia Richie, causing her to have a meltdown. Although the autoimmune disease has played a key role in Selena’s struggles, the source contends that her “unhealthy relationship” with Bieber combined with “constant partying” made everything worse.
Bieber attempted to ignore Gomez, added the insider, but that caused even more issues.
“Her problems are a combination of drinking, partying and her lupus.”
In addition, a source told Radar Online that drugs are involved in the 24-year-old singer’s struggles.
“It is terrible that she has lupus,” emphasized the insider, “but she is using this as an excuse for everything lately and the truth is that she is just a mess right now.”
Following the murder of Christina Grimmie, Gomez allegedly began abusing drugs, according to Radar. The drugs included “Lunesta, Ambien, Klonopin and Xanax,” commented the insider.
However, regardless of what is happening in her friend’s life, Swift wants to be there for her, shared Hollywood Life’s source.
“The two have been in constant communication with each other,” revealed the insider. “Taylor has made it clear to Selena that she has her back and can come spend time with her whenever she wants.”
Although Swift has a busy schedule, she’s still determined to spend time with her best friend as soon as possible, added the source.
“Taylor wants to try and see Selena as soon as she can to give her a big hug.”
Ever since Swift reignited her feud with Kanye West and Kim Kardashian on social media, she has been cautious about what she posts. But that caution doesn’t extend to her BFF. Taylor was quick to share a throwback photo of the two for her birthday.
“Going through old pictures today, because @selenagomez just turned 24!” wrote Swift for the caption. “I can’t imagine my life without you.”
