Young Thug is no doubt one of the most unique and controversial rappers in the hip hop industry. Currently aged 25, he has achieved a lot since he went mainstream. Presently, he is the only rapper in 2016 to have three Top 5 albums on the charts. The following is an excerpt of a report on this by The Boom Box.
“No, My Name is Jeffery, Slime Season 3, and I’m Up all hit the top 5 on the rap charts—and two of them charted in the Top 10 on the Billboard album chart. Jeffery, Thugger’s most recent release, debuted at No. 3 on the Rap Album chart, while Slime Season and I’m Up hit that chart at No. 1 and No. 4 respectively.”
His Jeffery album is believed to be his most successful yet. The controversial imagery in its cover, which features Young Thug donning a blue ruffled dress, is said to have partly contributed to its success. It apparently sold 18,000 units in the week ending in Sept. 1. According to Garfield Larmond, the cover art photographer, Young Thug wanted the dress the first time he saw it. The following was his revelation as reported by Fader.
“So, we were just looking through the photos at the end of the shoot,” Larmond said, “and [Thug] said, ‘What’s that? I need it.’. “He saw the piece in New York, and said immediately, ‘I want that for the cover.’ Like, there was no thought about it. He just saw it and knew he wanted it.”
His choice of dressing for the shoot is not surprising considering that Young Thug has on numerous occasions confessed to preferring women’s clothing over men’s, saying that it was something he has been into since he was a young kid. Speaking to GQ last year, Young Thug offered the following in the interview.
“GQ: Why do you wear women’s clothing?
Young Thug: Because women’s clothes are [slimmer] than men’s clothes. The jeans I got on right now, they’re women’s jeans. But they fit how they’re supposed to fit. Like a rock star. The only thing I probably have in men’s is, like, briefs. T-shirts. Ninety percent of my clothes are women’s.
GQ: When did you start wearing predominantly women’s clothing?
Young Thug: When I was 12 or some shit, started gambling, getting my own money. My dad wouldn’t buy me tight pants. I had to get my own money to buy them.”
This year, however, he intends to go beyond what he has always achieved, and that is to wear a dress on his wedding day. This is according to his revelation when speaking to Billboard. The following is an excerpt of the report from the site.
“When it comes to swag,” he says, “there’s no gender involved.” He has worn a frock with trousers for Calvin Klein’s 2016 global campaign, a skinny tracksuit for Puma’s Classics collection, and, soon, he’ll don another statement gown, for his wedding to swimwear designer Jerrika Karlae (“There will be two brides,” he says).”
Now however, his fiancée Jerrika Karlae has stated that there will be only one bride at their wedding; not two as stated by the rapper. She clarified this via Twitter, stating “Two brides my A**. Funny joke tho.”
She also accused Billboard of twisting Young Thug’s words, saying, “And billboard magazine totally twisted thugs words… I was there the entire interview never said any of that stuff verbatim. I don’t like how people do interviews and then try to twist his words to make it more juicy…that shouldn’t be legal”.
It however remains to be seen whether Young Thug will wear anything other than a dress on his wedding day.
