‘Suits’ Season 6 Spoilers: Creator Originally Wanted Jessica Pearson Killed In Episode 10

After being on Suits for five and a half seasons, Gina Torres (Jessica Pearson) has officially left the hit USA series. In last Wednesday night’s midseason finale, Jessica decided to step down from Pearson Specter Litt and leave the firm to Harvey (Gabriel Macht) and Louis (Rick Hoffman).

“P.S.L.” was a Jessica-centric episode, one that Suits fans have been dying to see for quite a while. While prepping for Leonard Bailey’s (Glenn Plummer) trial, Jessica came to realize that she turned out to be the lawyer she told her father she would never be. In a flashback, a young Jessica told her father that she got into Harvard law, a decision that clearly pissed him off. Allen Pearson wanted his daughter to go to medical school, saying that lawyers were “nothing but power-hungry bottom feeders.”

“You go to that school you’re going to get affected by their lawyer mindset and when you come out you’re not going to give a sh*t about your fellow men,” he told her.

Jessica’s commitment to the Innocence Project, however, was tested when she had to make a decision between saving her firm and fighting for Leonard Bailey’s innocence—she chose the latter. Although everything worked out in the end, Leonard was proven innocent, Harvey and Louis saved the day with a little help from Stu (Ian Reed Kesler), and Jessica decided that it’s about time to start a new chapter in her life.

“I have decided to step down. Somewhere along the way I forgot why I became a lawyer in the first place and it wasn’t just to fight for money and power. It was to fight for something more,” she explained.

While we have yet to find out what the future holds for Jessica, it would be safe to say that she will be starting fresh with her on-again, off-again flame Jeff Malone (D.B. Woodside).

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gina Torres decided to leave Suits to spend more time in Los Angeles. She also ended up getting a pilot for ABC’s The Death of Eva Sofia Valdez, which unfortunately was not picked up to series.

Suits creator Aaron Korsh revealed that he originally had a different midseason finale in mind, with Jessica ending up getting killed by the victim’s father. He wanted it to be a twist fans would never see coming.

“Jessica was going to make this decision to go off into the sunset with Jeff Malone, and that father Larry Marsden (Colin Glazer), who was a little bit crazy and accosted Rachel and got broken on the stand, was going to bring a gun and go nuts and kill her. I didn’t think we were going to see it; we were going to hear about it. It was going to shatter everyone and we were going to do a two-year time jump afterwards.”

The network, however, did not agree with the direction he was heading. Although Korsh admitted that USA would have reconsidered if they fought for it, he explained that they were just on a tight deadline for them to plan two endings. Even if they ended up killing Torres’ character, Korsh said that she could still come back in flashback episodes, much like what they do with Mike’s grandmother. Jessica getting her happy ending with Jeff was, in a way, also unexpected in a drama like Suits.

“I don’t feel like we give happy, unfettered endings in Suits that often so it was sort of unexpected to end episodes eight, nine and now 10 with a happy ending,” Korsh explained.

Suits Season 6B is expected to premiere by early 2017.
