‘Game Of Thrones’ Season 7: Is Gendry The Key To Defeating The White Walkers?

Gendry has been non-existent in Game of Thrones for the past three seasons. Viewers refuse to consider that Robert Baratheon’s surviving child might have died. For many, Gendry is still rowing and when he comes back, it will be for something big. Will he finally return to Game of Thrones Season 7 to play an important role in the looming war between the living and the White Walkers?

Speculations about his return have emerged when some fans allegedly saw actor Joe Dempsie in Belfast airport.

While he might be simply visiting someone in the area, Vanity Fair presented a reminder that Art Parkinson (Rickon), Natalia Tena (Osha), and Rory McCann (The Hound) were also “casually visiting” Belfast last year, but then they appeared in Game of Thrones Season 6.

Gendry’s whereabouts haven’t been known ever since Ser Davos helped him flee from Dragonstone. However, in George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series, Gendry survives and starts working for a Riverlands inn as a blacksmith.

A Reddit user theorized that Gendry might come back in Game of Thrones Season 7 and meet Sam who will soon commence his training at the Citadel to be a full-fledged Maester.

“I believe we will cross paths with Gendry again in Oldtown when Sam starts his studies as a Maester. I believe that Sam will study the creation of Valyrian Steel and will require a smith. He will then go to the smith that resides in Oldtown who will be no other than Gendry.”

Game of Thrones fans know by heart that Valyrian steel is one of the only two known things that can lead to the White Walkers’ demise. For those asking if Gendry knows how to forge Valyrian steel, it should be noted that Gendry used to work as an apprentice for Tobho Mott, one of the few remaining armorers who know the art of reworking the metal.

It wasn’t clear if Gendry indeed learned the craft, but when a fan asked Martin if Tohbo taught Gendry the secrets behind the precious steel, he answered, “Interesting question.”

The White Walkers will soon start their journey to reach the Wall, and if Gendry comes back and teams up with Sam, the duo could definitely contribute to defeating the feared army.

Dempsie recently told the Digital Spy that he’s “in the dark as anyone else” when it comes to Gendry’s story. Nonetheless, he said that it would be lovely for Robert’s rightful heir to finally return.

“There’s a lot of unanswered questions about Gendry and the longer it goes on, the more obvious his absence becomes. I mean, God, the amount of flippin’ memes I get sent on Twitter…whether they’ll bow to that pressure or not, I don’t know. But fingers crossed, because it’d be lovely to go back.”

Game of Thrones recently took home nine awards at the 2016 Creative Arts Emmys. HBO’s famed fantasy show now has 35 Emmys:

  • Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series
  • Outstanding Special Visual Effects: “Battle of the Bastards”
  • Outstanding Production Design: “Blood of My Blood,” “The Broken Man,” “No One”
  • Outstanding Stunt Coordination: Rowley Irlam, Stunt coordinator
  • Outstanding Sound Mixing: “Battle of the Bastards”
  • Outstanding Makeup (Non-Prosthetic) for a Single-Camera Series: “Battle of the Bastards”
  • Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup for a Series, Limited Series, Movie or Special: “The Door”
  • Outstanding Costumes for a Period/Fantasy Series, Limited Series or Movie: “The Winds of Winter”
  • Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing for a Drama Series: “Battle of the Bastards”

There is apparently so much love for the “Battle of the Bastards” episode, especially after Jon Snow came out of it triumphantly. Ramsay Bolton did not make it out of Season 6 alive, but no one’s complaining.

Game of Thrones Season 6 gave viewers a collective sense of satisfaction when it killed off probably the most abhorred character in the series. Ramsay suffered a gruesome demise when his face was eaten off by his dog. Visual effects team Image Engine recently revealed that they needed to tone down the scene for it appeared too gory.

The company’s supervisor, Mat Krentz, told Variety that the team initially made a CG representation of Iwan Rheon’s jaw to make it appear that the canine was really chomping down the flesh. However, someone from the production said that it was horrifying which prompted Krentz’s team to scale down the scene.
