Lady Gaga Insists ‘Perfect Illusion’ Is Not About Taylor Kinney, Opens Up About Mental Health Issues

Lady Gaga’s new single “Perfect Illusion” has had her fans buzzing about her split with former fiancé Taylor Kinney. The singer insists that she didn’t pull a Taylor Swift and write a breakup song about him, reports People.

With lyrics like “it wasn’t love, it was a perfect illusion,” fans have been wondering if the lead single from her upcoming album is a breakup song. Gaga revealed in an interview with Andy Cohen for his SiriusXM channel Radio Andy show Andy Cohen Live that the song is not about Kinney, whom she recently ended her engagement with back in July.

“‘Perfect Illusion’ is about a lot of different people in my life, a lot of different things. But the record is about being so intoxicated with love, you know, so high, dilated, falling free, in a modern ecstasy that you wake up one day and you can’t believe that it was not real. How did that happen? How did I do that? That song is sort of raging against that experience.”

The 30-year-old American Horror Story star went on to say that she doesn’t have any bad blood with the 35-year-old Chicago Fire star.

“I just want to say… I love Taylor so, so much, and this song is not a hit out against Taylor. He’s my best friend. This song is just about, I’m sure, not only the feelings I’ve had, that he’s had, that my friends have had, that my sister has in her relationship. It’s a record about all of us. And I would never use my song or want to use the public to hurt anyone that I love so much.”

There is some hope that Lady Gaga and Taylor Kinney could reunite in the future. In her Instagram post on July 20, she asked her fans to “root” for them to get back together.

“Taylor and I have always believed we are soulmates. Just like all couples we have ups and downs, and we have been taking a break. We are both ambitious artists, hoping to work through long-distance and complicated schedules to continue the simple love we have always shared. Please root us on. We’re just like everybody else and we really love each other.”

Despite the lyrics of her new song, insiders told E! News that there’s still hope that the couple could get back together. On Friday, Sept. 9, the same day that “Perfect Illusion” dropped, insiders revealed to the outlet that Gaga’s relationship with Kinney was very “intense” and “emotional” at times. She may have used the song to get her feelings out, but there is still some hope for the former couple.

Also, sources told Us Weekly last month that Kinney would love to get back together with Gaga. Along with opening up her heart, Gaga has opened up about her struggles with her mental health while being in the spotlight, reports Teen Vogue. In an interview with the Mirror, she revealed that she took some time off after Artpop because she felt overwhelmed with the pressures that came with fame.

“When my career took off, I don’t remember anything at all. It’s like I’m traumatized. I needed time to recalibrate my soul. I definitely look after my well-being.”

Instead, Gaga released a joint jazz album with Tony Bennett and pursued acting by starring in AHS: Hotel. Now that Gaga is back with a pop single and album on the way, she revealed that she takes medication for her anxiety and depression.

“I openly admit to having battled depression and anxiety and I think a lot of people do. I think it’s better when we all say: ‘Cheers’ and ‘fess up to it.'”
