‘Modern Family’ Season 8 Cast: Which Characters Are Returning For The New Season?

ABC’s Modern Family will return for Season 8 on September 21, however, big changes are expected to be in store for the show following a less than successful Season 7. But will your favourite Modern Family character still be part of the sitcom’s cast?

In this article, we’ll take a look at which Modern Family cast members are returning for the show’s Season 8 and where their characters will be when the new season premieres on ABC later this month.

According to Gamenguide, Season 8 of Modern Family will open directly following the events of Season 7, with the Pritchett, Dunphy, and Tucker families all on vacation. In fact, the season’s first episode is titled “A Tale of Three Cities” and will follow each of the three families across the country. However, the producers of Modern Family have promised the extended family won’t be apart for too long, with each family returning to California for the season’s second episode, which will air a week later on September 8.

Fans of the show will be pleased to hear that does, of course, mean that each of the show’s main characters will make a return for Season 8. The Dunphy family will once again comprise of Phil, played by Ty Burrell, Claire, played by Julie Bowen, Haley, played by Sarah Hyland, Alex, played by Ariel Winter, and Luke, played by Nolan Gould.

Meanwhile, the Pritchetts will once again comprise of Jay, played by Ed O’Neill, Gloria, played by Sofia Vergara, Manny, played by Rico Rodriguez, and the youngest addition to the family, Joe, played by Jeremy Maguire. Also returning will be the Tucker-Pritchett family, which includes Mitchell, played by Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Cameron, played by Eric Stonestreet, and Lily, played by Aubrey Anderson-Emmons. That being said, the season is also expected to bring back many series regulars, including Andy, played by Adam DeVine.

As is customary before any new season of Modern Family, the producers have already confirmed what the overall synopsis for this season will be. According to the Parent Herald, the season will continue to follow each of the characters as their stories develop, whilst also introducing new dynamics that will bring the family together regularly again.

The season will start with Gloria’s hot sauce business gaining traction, whilst Claire continues to struggle running her father’s business and Jay equally struggling to keep his nose out. All of that will be sent against the backdrop of Phil taking on more duties around the house. However, there’s set to be big developments for the kids too. Luke and Manny are now entering their senior year together, with producers keen to portray what troubles the pair will get into along the way.

Similarly, both Alex and Haley will have their own paths to head down in Season 8. Whilst Alex takes up more student duties at Caltech, Haley takes a risky leap into the unknown by becoming an entrepreneur for the first time, all while juggling her relationship with Andy.

Modern Family is also well known for its strong array of guest actors, with Season 8 being no exception. Previous guest actors to make an appearance in Modern Family include Elizabeth Banks and Jesse Eisenberg. This season will see Martin Short and Nathan Fillion make appearances in the show’s Halloween and New Year’s Eve episodes respectively. Martin Short is expected to spend his episode working with Phil Dunphy, whilst Nathan Fillion’s role in the new season yet to be confirmed.
