Episode 11 of AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead revealed that Ofelia has likely taken the truck and disappeared. But where has she gone, and why?
Spoiler alert: This article discusses Season 2 of AMC’s Fear The Walking Dead. Please proceed with caution if you wish to avoid spoilers.
At first, in Episode 10 (entitled “Pablo & Jessica”) of Fear the Walking Dead, Madison Clark (Kim Dickens) and Victor Strand (Colman Domingo) thought that Ofelia (Mercedes Mason) and Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey) had fled in their truck and left them stranded at the hotel. However, as the audience knew, this was not the case, as Alicia was with Elena (Karen Bethzabe), and they were in trouble. Their fault is soon realized when Alicia and Elena are rescued by Madison and Strand. The assumption, then, is that only Ofelia took the truck.
It is possible Ofelia didn’t take the truck in Episode 11 of Fear the Walking Dead. She could have headed out on foot, considering just how forlorn she was. Perhaps her mental state saw her deciding to risk the undead or be returned to her parents via them attacking her. If so, Ofelia might not be very far away from the hotel at all.
If Ofelia didn’t take the truck, then someone else did. As yet, who that person might be has not yet been revealed in Fear the Walking Dead. We do know it is unlikely to be any of the characters already established in the show as none have been seen driving it or talking about it. It is possible the new group in the hotel, from the doomed wedding party, might have taken it and have not revealed it yet, but this seems unlikely, as they do not seem prepared to leave the hotel any time soon.
It is likely Ofelia really did take the truck. If this is the case, where did she go? The Episode 12 preview of Fear the Walking Dead might have given us a clue.
For the briefest of moments, a shot of what appears to be the same truck Madison’s group drove up to the hotel is shown driving along a highway. You cannot see who is driving the vehicle, however, they do slow down at a road sign. That sign shows two directions: Mexicali and the U.S. The truck appears to be heading towards the U.S.
If this is the case, and Ofelia is the one driving the vehicle, why has she chosen to return to the U.S? What ties her to the U.S. now that both of her parents are dead? A hint revealed in an earlier episode of Fear the Walking Dead may reveal the truth.
In Episode 9 of Fear the Walking Dead, Ofelia mentioned that she nearly married a man called William. She chose her family over him, though, when he transferred to New Mexico. Now, if Ofelia was coming from the region of the hotel and had to turn off to the U.S. near Mexicali, it appears she might be planning to drive to New Mexico, which isn’t that far from that signpost. Sure, she would still have to drive through Arizona to get there, but it would be more doable than, say, driving to Atlanta.
Even if Ofelia is heading to New Mexico, Fear‘s showrunner, Dave Erickson revealed to Entertainment Weekly that viewers will find out Ofelia’s fate soon.
“We will reconnect with Ofelia very, very soon. She took it upon herself to leave her makeshift family for reasons that we will reveal shortly, and what it will represent for her is the last stab at hope — the last stab at something that for her is really an act of defiance of the apocalypse. We’re starting to lay track and starting to introduce elements that will gradually steer us towards season 3, and her journey is kind of instrumental in that.”
