‘Longmire’ S5 Trailer: Major Character Gunned Down? [Video, Spoilers]

The Longmire Season 5 trailer dropped recently from Netflix ahead of the season’s September 23 debut, and it has a pretty major reveal regarding that fourth season cliffhanger that left everyone on-edge.

Before going any further, you should know there are about to be some spoilers on last season (and this new season), so if you don’t want to know, bookmark this and come back to it later.

That said, here goes.

If you watched the end of Longmire Season 4, then you know it ended on a pretty ambiguous note with viewers unsure of whether Walt survived the raid on his house by an unseen assailant.

The show’s title is Longmire, so it probably will come as no surprise that he did, but fans were still left with questions. Who kicked in the door? Was his lady friend killed? Is it a dream sequence of some kind? How does he get out of this one?

Turns out, he doesn’t.

According to the Longmire Season 5 trailer, the attacker does, in fact, kick in Walt’s door and fire on him. Apparently, he is successful, too, since now Walt has no recollection of what happened, and the season seems to be about him solving the mystery of what happened and who was behind it while fighting off his own mental impairment.

Now, this still leaves a ton of questions regarding where Longmire Season 5 goes from that interesting finale.

For example, was Walt’s significant other killed in the attack? (She’s nowhere to be found in the trailer.)

Did Walt return fire and kill his attacker in the process of getting injured?

Was Walt shot in the head since he appears to be having trouble remembering anything about the event? If so, what does that mean for the long-term faculties of the character?

As fans of the Craig Johnson novels will recall, the Longmire literary universe previously experimented with forever impacting a character’s identity from a brutal head trauma. (See Cady in Kindness Goes Unpunished and Another Man’s Moccasins.)

Another element Longmire Season 5 seems to be experimenting with is that of the Vic-Walt relationship dynamic. This would seem to suggest that Walt’s lover from the end of Season 4 will no longer be around, perhaps due to the attack.

Now that Sheriff Longmire is trying to pick up the pieces of his life, he seems to be a little more fixated on Vic (Katee Sackhoff), and there have been hints in both the Longmire Season 5 trailer and previous images released from the set suggesting the show finally “goes there” between the two.

In the novels, Vic and Walt broke their sexual tension in Kindness Goes Unpunished.

To date, in the series, the sexual tension seems to be entirely on one side with Vic occasionally showing some interest in a physical relationship with Walt. However, he has tended to keep things professional.

Now that Walt’s personality seems to be undergoing a dramatic transformation, fans can expect the show to venture further in that direction.

Other reveals from the Longmire Season 5 trailer show that Walt’s relationship with Vic isn’t the only thing on the verge of a change.

He also seems to be more at odds with his old friend Henry Standing Bear (Lou Diamond Phillips) as well as his daughter Cady (Cassidy Freeman), who has taken a job with long-time nemesis Jacob Nighthorse (A Martinez).

Expect a more volatile and paranoid Walt Longmire this season, fans, at least judging from the Longmire Season 5 trailer.
