Catwoman Anne Hathaway Wants To Sharpen Her Claws

In 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises, Anne Hathaway reinvigorated the Catwoman character for a new generation, following the mixed reviews Halle Berry received for her version of the frisky feline in 2004’s Catwoman. Sadly, Hathaway hasn’t returned to that role since her first outing, but that may change, if Anne gets her way. The star of the upcoming Ocean’s Eight film has recently expressed an interest in playing Catwoman again, as comic book adaptations and superhero films enjoy a new golden era on the big screen, though Hathaway freely admits there are some obstacles to returning in a new Batman film.

A New Catwoman Role Would Make Anne Hathaway Purr

Anne Hathaway has just revealed to Variety that she’s very interested in a spin-off Catwoman franchise, suggesting that now would be the purr-fect time to bring the DC Comics character back to the big screen. Anne was out promoting another film, the sci-fi action flick, Colossal, at the Toronto International Film Festival, when she opened up about returning to theaters as Catwoman.

Ms. Hathaway says that she loved playing Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises, but shares that she’s not unaware of the changes in the Batman franchise. Hathaway’s role as Catwoman was a part of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, and Anne says that being a part of that may limit the ways in which she could be brought into the new direction of the Batman films.

The new direction of the DC Comics universe with Ben Affleck as Batman has branched off into several new areas, suggesting there may be options for Ms. Hathaway to again play Catwoman. On the flip side, it may also mean that Warner Bros. could be more interested in recasting Catwoman in much the same way the other characters have been cast. In their interview with Anne, Variety asked if she felt possessive of her Catwoman character.

“I don’t think you can,” said Ms. Hathaway. “It sort of goes with the territory when you accept it and receive it from the last Catwoman. I was shown such generosity from Halle [Berry] and from Michelle [Pfeiffer], and so I would do that the next time as well.”

Ocean’s Eight Star Anne Hathaway On Mixing It Up With Rihanna

Also catching up with Ms. Hathaway at T.I.F.F., E! News showed greater interest in grilling Anne on her upcoming Ocean’s Eight project, a film in which the Oscar-winning actress will share the spotlight with musical artist turned actress, Rihanna. Hathaway has long been a fan of Rihanna’s music, so, when asked if she looked forward to sharing the screen with Rihanna, Anne couldn’t help to respond with a bit of humorous sarcasm.

“No, she’s terrible. It’s like, ‘Ugh, do I have to?'”

Anne followed up her jesting with some truth and much adoration for the “Love on the Brain” singer.

“Rihanna and I did Saturday Night Live a few years ago and she was gorgeous in every way you can be gorgeous.”

While Hathaway is certainly looking forward to her on-camera role with Rihanna, she revealed that she was most looking forward to their time between shoots. Anne says she hopes Rihanna will share her make-up and beauty secrets, as the two celebrities get to know one another.

Ocean’s Eight will be an all-female spin-off of the popular 2001 Ocean’s Eleven reboot, which starred George Clooney and Brad Pitt. For this newly revised spin-off, Rihanna and Anne Hathaway will be joined by Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter, Mindy Kaling, and hip hop artist Awkwafina. E! News reports that American Horror Story star Sarah Paulson is also in talks to join the cast.
