‘American Horror Story’ Season 6: Lady Gaga’s ‘Perfect Illusion’ Promo Teases Premiere [Video]

Warning: This article could contain American Horror Story Season 6 spoilers.

American Horror Story Season 6 will finally premiere on Wednesday, ending months of speculation about the season’s theme. To get fans ready for the big day, FX just dropped a new teaser featuring Lady Gaga’s new single, “Perfect Illusion.” In an appropriate twist, the promo flashes a compilation of the slew of Season 6 teasers released by the cable network, while AHS star Gaga wails, “It was a perfect illusion.”

As the Inquisitr previously reported, American Horror Story executive producer Ryan Murphy and FX CEO John Landgraf chose to keep viewers guessing about the Season 6 theme by dropping over 25 teasers and inviting fans to guess which one is authentic.

Landgraf explained the decision at the Television Critics Association press tour via IndieWire.

“We decided, Ryan and I and [FX marketing president] Stephanie Gibbons, that it would be really fun this year…to keep it a mystery. There is a theme and a setting and a place and time, but we’re not going to reveal it.”

Murphy also told the Hollywood Reporter about the ploy.

“The show is in its sixth season, and we’ve always done everything by the book. Come January or February, I announce what the theme is, and then we announce the cast. We wanted to [create a] different experience for fans this year.”

Now, the Lady Gaga promo suggests it was all just an illusion anyway.

Or was it? The Inquisitr reported the American Horror Story Season 6 theme could be The Mist after review site Rotten Tomatoes accidentally listed the title weeks in advance. TV Guide also listed the title as American Horror Story: The Mist, according to Entertainment Weekly, as did Comcast/Xfinity, according to Bloody Disgusting.

If The Mist is the Season 6 theme, what could that mean?

Stephen King published a novella called The Mist back in 1980. The creepy tale centers on a small New England town that is enveloped in a supernatural fog filled with vicious — and hungry — creatures. A group of townsfolk becomes trapped in a grocery store, and they watch in horror as monsters pick off anyone who ventures into the mist. Former Walking Dead showrunner Frank Darabont directed a film based on the story in 2007.

Coincidentally (or not), FX released a Season 6 promo called “The Mist.”

Those who have been following American Horror Story Season 6 spoilers know that many people think the new theme will involve the infamous Lost Colony of Roanoke, whose settlers mysteriously disappeared off the North Carolina coast in the late 1500s. TMZ posted supposed AHS set photos showing the word “CROATOAN” carved on a tree. That word, which was found etched into a wooden fence post surrounding the abandoned village, was one of the only clues left behind by the vanished settlers. Another batch of alleged set photos shows actors in Pilgrim-like costumes carrying torches through a primitive village.

Could American Horror Story Season 6 use the monsters from Stephen King’s The Mist to explain the fate of the Lost Colony of Roanoke? A supernatural fog enveloping an early American island settlement filled with superstitious villagers does carry a certain appeal.

No matter what the Season 6 storyline, MoviePilot reports the following actors have confirmed their involvement: Lady Gaga, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Denis O’Hare, Matt Bomer, Leslie Jordan, Cheyenne Jackson, and Angela Bassett. Cuba Gooding Jr., who played O.J. Simpson in Murphy’s other smash FX anthology series, American Crime Story, may also join the fray, according to Yahoo TV.
