Patricia Spann: Oklahoma Mother Marries Her Daughter, Was Previously Married To Her Son

Oklahoma mother Patricia Spann married her daughter eight years after she married, and was granted an annulment from, her son. According to reports, authorities were alerted to the situation after the family was referred to the child welfare department.

Patricia Spann is the biological mother of at least three children. However, as she was determined to be an unfit parent, she lost custody of her daughter and two sons. As reported by the Associated Press, the children were subsequently adopted by their paternal grandmother.

In 2008, the Oklahoma mother knowingly married her biological son, Jody Calvin Spann Jr. Although that marriage was annulled in 2010, Patricia Spann married her biological daughter six years later.

As reported by 12News Now, Patricia and Misty Spann reunited in 2014. In March of 2016, the mother and daughter were married. Authorities learned the Oklahoma mother married her daughter after the family was referred to the state child welfare department.

According to reports, Patricia Spann freely admitted Misty Spann is her biological daughter. She also admitted she was previously married to her biological son.

During an interview with investigators, Patricia denied having a sexual relationship with either of her children. The Oklahoma mother said she married her daughter so she and Misty could adopt a child. She claims she married her son “to prevent him from being deployed with the military.”

Although she denies having an intimate relationship with either of her children, Patricia Spann was arrested and charged with felony incest. In the United States, incest laws are determined by each state.

The University of California reports sex between immediate relatives, who are 18 or older, is not a criminal offense in New Jersey and Rhode Island. However, all 50 states prohibit marriage between parents, or parental figures, and their children.

In Oklahoma, incest, which includes adultery, fornication, and marriage, is a felony and is punishable by a maximum of 10 years in prison. Therefore, Patricia Spann and Misty Spann were both arrested and charged with violating the state’s incest law.

As stated in the official court record, the Oklahoma mother and daughter appeared in court on September 7. The next hearing was scheduled for October 6 and bond was set at $10,000. Patricia and Misty are prohibited from contacting each other while their cases are in progress.

Although Patricia Spann and her daughter were both arrested, Cody Spann blames his mother for forcing his sister into the marriage.

“I think she’s worthless she put my sister into this… For you to want to put your own daughter through this, what kind of person are you?”

Patricia vehemently denies having a sexual relationship with her daughter and son. However, intimate feelings or relationships between reunited family members is not uncommon.

As reported by the Telegraph, “a powerful sexual attraction that occurs when biological relatives – parent and offspring, siblings or half siblings or first and second cousins – meet for the first time as adults” is called Genetic Sexual Attraction or GSA.

According to the Post-Adoption Centre and University College London, GSA occurs in an estimated 50 percent of reunions between biological relatives. In most cases, the relatives meet for the first time as adults.

Despite the statistic possibility, Patricia has denied claims that she and her children were romantically involved. Neither Jody nor Misty has publically discussed their relationship with their mother.

Patricia Spann also said she was unaware that she was breaking the law, as she was not listed as the “mother” on either of her biological children’s birth certificates. Neither the Oklahoma mother nor her daughter has commented about their arrest.
