Janet Jackson Weight Gain: Singer Reportedly Gains 100 Pounds During Pregnancy, Prompting Doctors To Place Her On Bed Rest

Janet Jackson is rumored to be dealing with a dangerous weight gain during her high-risk pregnancy, with a report that the singer has put on 100 pounds in her first two trimesters.

The 50-year-old Jackson made waves back in May with the announcement that she was pregnant with her first child. Since then, there has been a lot of attention on her later-in-life pregnancy, which up until this point had appeared to be going smoothly.

But that may have taken a turn. A report from Hollywood Life claimed that Jackson had been placed on bed rest after gaining close to 100 pounds, which brought her to a reportedly dangerous 250 pounds.

That could put her at risk for a number of complications, including high blood pressure, excessive water retention, and joint and back pain, dietitian Lisa DeFazio told Hollywood Life.

“Excessive weight gain during pregnancy can lead to serious health risks,” DeFazio said. “These include gestational diabetes which means the baby will be overweight (over 10lbs). It is likely the baby would have blood sugar issues upon birth and the baby may not fit in the birth canal, so the doctors would have to do an emergency C-section.”

There has been a lot of interest surrounding Janet Jackson’s pregnancy through its first few months. Back in late July, tabloid magazines circulated what were believed to be the first official pictures of the singer’s baby bump, though they weren’t terribly revealing.

Radar Online was among the outlets to publish the photos, which showed Jackson getting out of a car with husband Wissam Al Mana, giving just a small glimpse of her mid-section. At the time, many fans noted how well Jackson seemed to look, especially during the often difficult first trimester and even more so considering the fact that she is 50 years old.

Janet Jackson had often spoken about her longing to become a parent, but hinted that there had been some difficulties in getting pregnant. She has also spoken about her own troubled and abusive childhood, noting that she planned to be a loving and nurturing parent.

In 2010, she told Access Hollywood that it was “in God’s hands” whether she would have a baby or not.

“I’d love to have a family,” Janet said. “But really, it’s in God’s hands. So, if it’s meant to be, I’ll have one. I hope it does.”

The following year, Jackson told CNN host Piers Morgan that she often was complimented on her maternal instincts, though Jackson seemed to play it off a bit.

“[People would tell me], ‘You’re very nurturing. You’re very mothering and you take care of people all the time.’ And yada, yada, yada. And so, I don’t know,” Janet said.

The alleged weight gain is surprising given that Janet Jackson was reportedly keeping a very close eye on her health. A source told Radar Online in July that she had constructed a special diet and even brought doctors into her home to make sure everything is going smoothly.

“Janet is super healthy and has been following her doctors orders religiously,” the source said. “She is working with a nutritionist and is not doing any crazy exercises. She is at the doctors constantly and they are considering having a medical nurse and a prenatal doctor on staff at their home.”

But as with all tabloid reports, it is difficult to tell if there is any truth to the rumor that Janet Jackson had an unusual weight gain, and especially not 100 pounds. Pictures included in Hollywood Life‘s story don’t seem to match the claims, as Jackson appears to only be gaining the normal weight that would be expected during pregnancy. It is unclear if the photos are current, however.
