Shia LaBeouf In ‘Suicide Squad’ Almost Happened, Says Actor

Shia LaBeouf was almost in Suicide Squad, the actor has come out to admit. He had actually auditioned for the role, but the studio turned him down. Coming from an early career which came to a screeching halt with Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Shia hasn’t had an easy time getting roles.

LeBeouf is mostly known for playing the almost Nicolas Cage-style loose cannon Sam Witwicky in Michael Bay’s silver screen adaptation of the classic anime about robots in disguise. Sadly, it was his temperamental attitude which we saw explode throughout those films which partly helped land him on the “do not call” list for major motion pictures. He has basically become almost a joke known for his off-screen antics.

Having been accused of plagiarism over and over by the public through social media, Shia LaBeouf had gone into a downward spiral of depression and odd stunts. He had done the infamous performance art, sitting in a room with a paper bag over his head donning the words “I am not famous anymore,” and has since slowly regained a degree of sanity.

It probably makes sense that Shia had auditioned for a role in a film featuring a collection of Batman and Justice League villains. His real life antics might have even made him a surreal addition to the cast, rivaling the method acting from Jared Leto’s Joker. It wasn’t a major villain he’d wanted to play, however.

The Nymphomaniac actor had wanted to play the role of Lieutenant GQ Edwards, according to Business Insider. Shia stated that when he auditioned, the studio rejected him for being insane. “I don’t think Warner Bros. wanted me. I went in to meet, and they were like, ‘Nah, you’re crazy. You’re a good actor, but not this one.’ It was a big investment for them.”

The Suicide Squad role Shia LaBeouf wanted eventually went to Scott Eastwood.

LaBeouf has also expressed his regret for having wanted to work with Steven Spielberg. The producer once loved for his involvement with E.T., Indiana Jones, and Star Wars has since made some critical flops like Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and the Transformers films. Shia has stated that the only Spielberg movie he enjoyed being in was the first Transformers, which coincidentally was the last Michael Bay movie the critics generally liked.

Vanity Fair revealed what Shia LaBeouf felt after having worked with the man for four movies.

“You get there, and you realize you’re not meeting the Spielberg you dream of. You’re meeting a different Spielberg, who is in a different stage in his career. He’s less a director than he is a f***ing company.

“You got to get this line out in 37 seconds. You do that for five years, you start to feel like not knowing what you’re doing for a living.”

Shia LaBeouf hasn’t ruled out working with Michael Bay again, though, a sentiment which costar Megan Fox has decided to go with despite fighting with Bay after Revenge of the Fallen. Shia says he wants to do something a “little ballsier” with future films, which could explain his trending run of independent movies. It seems he enjoys getting a little crazy on the screen.

It might be safe to predict that we will see the return of Sam Witwicky if Michael Bay wants Shia LaBeouf back. Of course, it could be risky now, with the Transformers director having earned his own reputation for over-sexualized female leads and racist characters.

Shia is trying to come back to major roles, but it probably won’t be with Warner Bros. after realizing they didn’t want him in Suicide Squad.
