‘Star Trek Online’ Now Available On PlayStation 4, Xbox One

Earlier this year in May, Perfect World Entertainment and Cryptic Studios announced that Star Trek Online would debut on consoles later this year. Today, the free-to-play MMORPG based on the sci-fi staple comes to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Players can download and play today with custom created Captains, an array of customizable ships, and a squad of AI Bridge Officers in both space and ground combat.

In fact, players begin by choosing one of the franchise’s familiar races or creating their own alien. After choosing to align themselves with one of three factions, players will level from 1 through 60 by entering in strategic space combat and squad-based ground combat. The Federation, the Romulan Republic, and the Klingon Defense Force each have their own ships, motives, and missions.

Star Trek Online has been available on PC for several years now, and with its release on consoles, all of that content is now available on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The game is completely free-to-play requiring no purchase to get started or a subscription to keep playing. The game offers many episodes of content and features many recognizable characters from CBS Studios’ iconic television show, according to the game’s official website.

“We have over 6 years of content available to you right at launch, including amazing character and ship customization, over 125 episodes that tell an amazing story, voice work from more than 15 actors from every Star Trek era, and fantastic end game queued content.”

For its release on console, Star Trek Online is overhauled in both appearance and function. Lighting improvements, player progression revamps, and redesigned input specifically for controllers are all part of the game on consoles. Even the UI is completely different from what a previous PC player might be accustomed to; all of it designed to be functional on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, according to the Arc Games website.

“Our first major task was to convert a PC game that takes nearly an entire keyboard to play into a game that plays well with a 12 button controller. We focused on getting the controls right before we began work in earnest on this project, because we knew the game had to be as tactical, fun, and accessible as the PC game that preceded it. A combination of radial menus and streamlining of some HUD elements created a game that is easily understood, instantly accessible, and incredibly fun to play.”

For those on PlayStation 4, Star Trek Online is available for download on the PlayStation Store. On PS4, the game is around 17 GB with a 14 GB file size listed on the PlayStation Store. PlayStation Plus is not required to play since Star Trek Online is a free-to-play title. PlayStation Plus is usually not required for free-to-play titles. Players on Xbox One can download Star Trek Online from the Microsoft Store to get started. The download on this system is just over 15 GB, and Xbox Live Gold is required to play.

Zen is available via the PlayStation Store and the Xbox One Store to fund additional purchases, too. Zen is the real world currency that is used to purchase items from the Zen Store in Star Trek Online. Items like new ships, clothing, race unlocks, Duty Officers, and much more are available for purchase. Convenience items like bank storage, name changes, character slots, and others can be purchased with Zen.

Star Trek Online is the second MMORPG release from Perfect World Entertainment on consoles recently. Neverwinter released in 2015 on Xbox One and in July of this year on PlayStation 4. Like Neverwinter, players will need a Perfect World Arc Games account to log in to Star Trek Online and start playing.
