‘Vikings’: When Will Season 4 Return? Post-Production Delays May Be The Reason No Date Has Been Set Yet

Ever since the mid-season finale of History’s Vikings back in April, fans have been wondering when Season 4 will return. The History channel has maintained that Vikings Season 4 will return this fall, but, beyond that, no date has been officially set.

UPDATE: Katheryn Winnick has confirmed via her Twitter account that Vikings Season 4B has been completed and is ready to go. She stopped short of releasing the return date though.

Spoiler Alert: This article discusses Season 4 of History’s Vikings as well as historical aspects of certain characters in the show. Please proceed with caution if you wish to avoid spoilers.

Many fans have speculated on the Season 4 return date of Vikings, and it was even thought the return would be announced at San Diego Comic-Con back in July. However, this never eventuated. But now, Kathryn Winnick, who plays the shield maiden, Lagertha, has posted a picture to her Facebook account that might explain why History channel is hesitant to lock down a Season 4 return date for Vikings.

The image show a visual of Lagertha, presumably from the Season 4 return of Vikings. The caption reads, “Mad rush to finish up Vikings 4B.. Get ready..it’s going to be epic! #Vikings #Lagertha #postproduction.”

Season 4 is the first time History’s Vikings has spanned twenty episodes for a season. Usually the show produces around ten episodes per season. With double the episodes for Season 4 of Vikings, it seems filming and post production may have taken longer than expected and History has left revealing the Season 4 return date of Vikings until the very last minute. At the time of publication of this article, there is still no official start date for the Season 4 return of Vikings. However, here is what we know for far about what will happen, story-wise, for the main characters when Vikings returns this fall.

The mid-season finale of Vikings saw Ragnar (Travis Fimmel) return to Kattegat many years after he left. The Season 4 return trailer, revealed at Comic-Con, suggests Ragnar will be captured at some point. For history buffs, this could signal the demise of the fan favorite character, as Ragnar eventually dies after being captured by King Ælla.

Ragnar’s boys, however, will start to play out a much larger role in the Season 4 return of Vikings. Ivar the Boneless, played by Alex Høgh Andersen in the TV series, is considered one of the most famous vikings, historically, so it seems his story and his Great Heathen Army will be explored moving forward in Vikings. Bjorn (Alexander Ludwig) will also play a larger role, setting sail for the mystical Mediterranean in the Season 4 return. As the Comic-Con trailer suggests, he will have to approach his uncle, Rollo (Clive Standen) for safe passage.

Rollo, we know, historically, will rule Normandy. So fans can expect this story will likely play out to some capacity in the Season 4 return of Vikings.

Ragnar’s oldest friend, Floki (Gustaf Skarsgard) is set to follow Bjorn in his exploration of the Mediterranean. However, Season 4 of Vikings will see Floki reevaluating his life according to an interview the show’s creator, Michael Hirst, did with Entertainment Weekly.

“Floki is now going through very deep and profound changes, and reevaluating his life, his relationships, and this will continue. This is a very big thread in the story moving forward. I can’t exaggerate how big these changes will be. It’s Floki having to reimagine his whole life, who he is, what he’s here for. It will lead to quite extraordinary outcomes.”

As for Lagertha, she will find romance again in the Season 4 return of Vikings. This time, however, she will chose a woman over a man in the hope she will not be usurped again. Lagertha will also finally confront Aslaug (Alyssa Sutherland) about the fact she stole everything Lagertha held dear all those years ago.
