“Hold Up,” Beyonce’s birthday surprise video, is just really intense. It begins with Bey describing some sort of religious ritual of cleansing or rite of passage. Her lyrics are incredibly deep. This new beginning is about true soul searching. The whole thing is just, well it is mind blowing. Here are the first few of her beginning phrases.

“I tried to change. closed my mouth more, tried to be softer, prettier, and less awake.
Fasted for sixty days, wore white, abstained from mirrors, abstained from sex.
Slowly did not speak another word.
In that time my hair grew past my ankles.
I slept on a mat on the floor. I swallowed a sword. I levitated to the basement.
Confessed my sins and was baptized in a river.”

#HappyBirthdayBeyonce is still trending on Twitter and just about everyone has sent birthday greetings to Bey. It still isn’t too late to slip in the last minute, slightly-belated happy birthday greeting. After all, it is trending. One could also send a thank-you note for the gift.

“Hold Up” is, according to the Rolling Stone, a “standout” from Beyonce’s album Lemonade. She’s giving this video segment away and allowing everyone to see her great work.

Beyonce’s own birthday plans included attending the Budweiser Made in America Festival with Jay-Z, according to E! News. Of course, the queen of pop had front row seats to all the performances. She saw Coldplay, Kelly Rowland, La La Anthony and Carmelo Anthony, just to name a few. Chris Martin gave Bey a shout-out from the stage.

“We want to say happy birthday to Mrs. Carter who is out here somewhere. Can you believe she’s 107 years old? Happy birthday, Bey.”

“Hold Up,” comes to fans exactly one week after Beyonce’s amazing performance at the MTV VMA awards. It was a 16-minute performance that held both the live audience and the viewers at home spellbound. It was enchanting, exciting and she beat up a car with a ball bat just like in the video. The only downside was that poor Britney Spears had to follow that act. What an impossible challenge.
