Ian Somerhalder, Paul Wesley Joins ‘The Originals’ Cast? Rekindle Friendship With Nina Dobrev

The Vampire Diaries fans were devastated when news of The CW series’ cancellation was confirmed back in July. The highly anticipated Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena (Nina Dobrev) reunion in the Season 8 finale could, however, make up for the sudden ending.

The Vampire Diaries showrunner Julie Plec assured fans that Nina Dobrev will be returning to the series finale, reprising her role as Elena for one last time. At the San Diego Comic-Con back in July, Plec told TV Line that fans could look forward to an “epic final season.” While refusing to reveal details about what the future holds for Damon and Elena, Plec said that they would want to give their viewers the ending they deserved.

“Not to put too much pressure on anything Nina Dobrev..but a promise was made. An emotional promise that I’d like to see come to life. You heard it here…there’s been friendship promises made, and now we’ll see if we can deliver on them.”

While we all are excited for Nina Dobrev’s The Vampire Diaries return, Plec admitted that actress did not sign any written agreement saying that she would be back for the finale. According to Pop Sugar, while Dobrev promised the TVD creator that she would love to be part of the finale, nothing is certain as of the moment.

“All I can say, because there is nothing written in stone, but Nina made me a promise when she left that she would come back and be part of the goodbye, and I intend on holding her to that, and I’m sure she intends on living up to it as well. We just have to figure it out: the how, the when, the what. But it would be a real tragedy if we couldn’t bring that story back around full-circle.”

The CW president Mark Pedowitz, however, assured fans that The Vampire Diaries would have a “great series finale” with or without Dobrev. While Elena played an integral part in the story, Pedowitz revealed that Plec had a backup plan if things did not work out.

Several reports insisted that the Nina Dobrev has lost interest in working with Ian Somerhalder. While the actor is happily married to Nikki Reed, insiders believed that there is still sexual tension between the two. According to Celeb Dirty Laundry, Dobrev and Somerhalder would, however, have to put their differences aside for the sake of the fans. CLD further pointed out that Dobrev’s return would benefit both their careers, especially Somerhalder’s.

“Working with Nina may not be ideal for Ian given their off-screen romantic history. But a paying acting job is better than being unemployed and auditioning for bit parts. Ian is pushing 40, and let’s face it, not all that talented.”

The outlet further claimed that Somerhalder may end up joining the cast of The Originals after The Vampire Diaries. Julie Plec said that some of the TVD characters could crossover with The Originals every now and then. Zap2It, however, predicted that Somerhalder may not be too keen on moving over to the spinoff after TVD. They pointed out that the actor decided to leave the series long before they announced its cancellation, which could mean that he is ready to move on from playing Damon Salvatore.

Paul Wesley, on the other hand, might be interested in the crossover. After all his character, Stefan Salvatore has already had a crossover once.

Even without the Salvatore brothers, The CW president Mark Pedowitz believed that The Originals could “live very well on its own,” hinting that the series could be renewed for another season.
