Post Office Hours Labor Day 2016: Is There Mail Delivery On Monday, September 5?

Labor Day is a big day for cookouts, parties, and sleeping late, but for others, it’s a regular work day, with many retail stores like Walmart and Target open for business as usual. However, the annual federal holiday always creates some confusion for people who are trying to find out if the post office is open and if letter carriers will be out delivering mail to homes and businesses on Monday, September 5.

Whether you are waiting for a bill to arrive in your mailbox, need to get to the post office to send out a package, or are waiting for a mail carrier, FedEx, or UPS delivery at your business, here’s the scoop on which mail delivery services will be operating on Labor Day 2016.

According to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, Labor Day is a federal holiday observed on the first Monday in September. While many businesses, such as malls, restaurants, and supermarkets, are open on September 5, most government offices, including the U.S. Post Office, will be closed on Monday.

Although Alternet reports that the post office has been delivering Amazon packages on Sundays since 2015, when regular mail is typically not delivered, don’t expect to see that package arrive on Monday.

Of note, commentary on the Amazon forum page indicates that some customers have received packages on other federal holidays, so there is a chance that some post office workers will be making Amazon package drop-offs on Monday.

Need to mail a package or check your post office box? You will have to wait until Tuesday, September 6 when all U.S. Post Office locations reopen and mail delivery resumes. If you need stamps, many grocery stores and convenience stores sell them at the register, but your mail won’t go out until the federal holiday is over.

What about UPS and FedEx? Will they be delivering packages, and can you stop by one of their local offices and ship a package on Monday?

If you have an urgent package to mail out on Monday, you will have to wait until Tuesday to mail it out or drive it to its destination yourself. Although both UPS and FedEx offices will be closed on Monday, September 5, there are some exceptions for those who are waiting for a package to be delivered.

According to UPS, if you are expecting a package that has been mailed via the UPS Express Critical service and it’s due to be delivered on Monday, September 5, it should be delivered as scheduled. FedEx reports that it will be closed on Monday, but Fedex Custom critical packages that are set for delivery on September 5 will be delivered.

Labor Day isn’t the only day that the U.S. Post Office, FedEx, and UPS are closed for business. According to RedCort, nine other holidays are observed in 2016, and that means more days off to come for some and a regular workday for others. In addition to U.S. Post Office and other federal offices, most banks and credit unions are closed on federal holidays.

The sixth federal holiday of 2016 is observed this Monday, September 5 and there are four more holidays to go before say goodbye the 2016 and usher in 2017. Here’s the full list of 2016 federal holidays if you’re still not sure when you may (or may not) have a day off.
