Labor Day 2016: Are Banks Open Today? Find A Full List Of What’s Open And What’s Closed

Labor Day 2016 has arrived, and with the unofficial end of summer comes plenty of questions about what’s open and what’s closed and plenty of confusion for people looking to make a trip to the bank or a quick run to the supermarket.

The final holiday before summer comes to an end, Labor Day is traditionally a time for picnics, parades, and some last-minute shopping before the kids head back to school. But it is also a federal holiday, meaning that some important destinations like the post office will be closed while most stores are open, sometimes on limited hours.

The result can be a somewhat confusing day for those looking to run errands.

What’s Closed On Labor Day 2016?

As mentioned above, Labor Day is a federal holiday, so all government offices are closed. This includes post offices, social security offices, and most Department of Motor Vehicle offices. Anyone looking to mail a package will actually be out of options entirely, as FedEx and UPS are both joining the United States Postal Service in closing down in honor of the holiday.

To honor the contributions of America’s labor movement, the pinnacle of American capitalism will be shutting down as well — the New York Stock Exchange. There will be no trading on Labor Day, and the Federal Reserve will also be closing its branches, IBT reported.

Nearly all major banks will also be closed on Labor Day, noted GoBankingRates.com. Some regional banks may offer limited hours and banks located inside supermarkets might be open as well, the report added, so it’s best to check with your individual bank to see if they might be open.

There could be one more option for customers of more tech-savvy banks, the report noted.

“Financial institutions generally follow the Federal Reserve schedule, and since Labor Day is a holiday observed by the central bank, you should expect most branch locations to be closed. The New York Stock Exchange, Nasdaq composite and the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association will also be closed on Labor Day, allowing employees to enjoy the day with family and friends. Of course, in today’s tech-savvy world, you’re never more than a few clicks away from your accounts, so if you need to access your funds, simply use your bank’s website, mobile app or ATM.”

Schools will also be closed on Labor Day, though some colleges will be holding classes.

What’s Open Labor Day 2016?

As one of the final chances to grab shoppers before the summer comes to an end, Labor Day is an important holiday for offering sales. Because of this, nearly all large retail outlets will be open on Monday, HolidayShoppingHours.com noted. This includes Walmart, Kmart, Target, Home Depot, Lowe’s, Trader Joe’s, Bass Pro Shops, Cabela’s, PetSmart, Kohl’s, Bed Bath & Beyond, Staples, Office Max, Office Depot, and Best Buy.

Also open on Labor Day will be major theme parks and movie theaters, as they try to grab the crowd looking for some end-of-summer entertainment.

This could also be a boon for travelers, as gas prices are at their lowest point on Labor Day in more than a decade.

Public transportation will be open, but as IBT noted there are some changes in major urban metros.

“Public transit is where things get hairy. On Monday, New York City subways and buses will run on their Sunday schedules. But in Brooklyn, there will be changes on the 2, 3, and 4 lines near Eastern Parkway due to the J’Ouvert parade from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. EDT. In Washington, D.C., trains will run on a Sunday schedule between 7 a.m. and midnight. However, construction will alter the red, orange, blue and silver lines as detailed here.”

For those looking to find out what else is open and closed on Labor Day 2016, especially for smaller stores or local outlets, it’s best to call ahead.
