Did ‘Supergirl’ Star Tyler Hoechlin Do Any Work To Get The Superman Role?

Teen Wolf star Tyler Hoechlin hung up his fangs (as well as his facial hair) in order to star as Clark Kent (aka the Man of Steel, aka Superman) this fall when Supergirl returns to the CW. As shocking as this might sound, an interview with Entertainment Weekly suggests this 28-year-old from California didn’t have to do much of anything in order to land this role.

If you are one of the Supergirl fans assuming that newcomer Tyler Hoechlin had to go through an intense screening process in order to make sure the best actor was selected for the role of Superman, you assumed wrong. The International Business Times reports that it was quick and easy for Hoechlin to seal the deal and land the role of the Man of Steel. In fact, Tyler claims it is one of the strangest experiences he has ever had during his career as an actor.

For starters, according to Tyler, there was never any audition for the role. Hoechlin thought it was pretty odd for such a high-profile role on Supergirl to lack an audition.

“I [Tyler] had a great meeting with [executive producers] Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg [in June]. I had been told that the meeting would have something to do with ‘Supergirl,’ but nothing really specific. Halfway through [the meeting], they brought up the idea of introducing Superman to the show and asked if I’d be interested. I said, ‘Yeah, absolutely. I’m obviously a fan.'”

During the interview with Entertainment Weekly, Tyler claims it was on a Monday that he had the first – and only – meeting with the executive producers of Supergirl. By Friday of the same week, Tyler Hoechlin received a call offering him the job.

“It was very flattering, and I wish every job came about that way.”

According to Andrew Kreisberg, Tyler was Berlanti’s first and ideal choice for the role. Kreisberg claims both he and Berlanti had been huge fans of Tyler Hoechlin and had followed him for years. From the very moment they sat down with him during the first – and only – meeting, they knew he was perfect for the role of Superman.

The International Business Times also reports Kreisberg was asked why he was so sure Tyler Hoechlin was right for the role of Superman. According to the producer, Tyler bears a resemblance to Clark Kent. However, he claimed it was more than just the actor’s resemblance to the character. He claims he also has a personality that matches the original DC Comics character.

“Not just with the looks, but he’s such a good guy, such a nice guy, and he’s so open and forthright and brimming with life. You just feel better when you’re around him, which I think is part of the secret of Superman. He is that ideal, but not in an unattainable way. Superman should make you feel like you can do anything, even though he’s the one that can do anything. And Tyler just had all that in spades.”

With the way the two producers felt about Tyler Hoechlin, there was never really a question regarding whether or not he was right for the role once they decided to introduce Superman into the series. The only question the producers had to deal with was whether or not Tyler was willing to accept the role. Kreisberg went on to reveal that neither he nor Berlanti was sure what they would do if Tyler Hoechlin had declined their offer to assume the role of Superman. The two producers believed this 28-year-old from California was so perfect for the role that they did not have a backup plan.

Tyler Hoechlin will appear in the first two episodes of Season 2 of Supergirl. Based on his recent pictures he’s shared on Instagram, it appears as if Tyler is having a great time on the set of the show.

Do you think it is fair that Tyler Hoechlin did not have to do any auditioning or screening to receive the role of Superman in Supergirl? Was he really the best choice for the role?

Supergirl Season 2 premieres on Monday, October 10 at 8 p.m. on the CW.
