September Free PS4 Games Include ‘Journey’ And ‘Lords Of The Fallen’

Calendars are about to turn to September, and Sony finally announced the free games coming to the PlayStation 4, PS3, and PS Vita for the month via PlayStation Plus. Subscribers can look forward to Journey and Lords of the Fallen among others.

The September slate of free PS Plus games will drop on Tuesday, September 6 for the all three PlayStation platforms when the PlayStation Store is updated. PS4 owners will get Journey, Lords of the Fallen, and Badland. Meanwhile, PS3 owners will also get Journey and Badland along with Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands and Datura. Finally, PS Vita handheld players will have the opportunity to download Badland and Amnesia: Memories at no extra cost.

PS Plus subscribers should note they still have the free games line-up from August to download until the PlayStation Store is updated next week. This includes Tricky Towers and Rebel Galaxy for the PS4, Yakuza 5 and Retro/Grade for the PS3, Patapon 3 for the PS Vita, and Ultraton for all three platforms.

Journey

Journey is the award-winning indie game from Thatgamecompany originally released for the PS3 in 2012. It received a remaster for the PlayStation 4 in July 2015 that only added to the game’s beautiful minimalist art style. The game received a 92 average review score on Metacritic where it was praised for its unique emotional experience and co-op play with the primary cons falling to its short playtime and shallow gameplay.

Lords of the Fallen

Lords of the Fallen has been compared heavily to the Dark Souls series due to its thoughtful tactical approach to weapons-based combat where players are forced to take it slow and learn from each death. The game follows a character named Hakryn who can be one of three classes – Warrior, Rogue, or Cleric. Progressing through the game’s story unlocks new abilities, but experience can be lost. Reviews for Lords of the Fallen were mixed with some outlets giving high marks for the less punishing combat, but the game also received negative marks for being derivative.

Badland

Badland is a side-scrolling action-adventure game with physics-based puzzles for players to solve via cloning the main character and controlling a small army. The game was originally released for the iPhone and iPad in 2013 before eventually reaching all three PlayStation platforms in 2015. It features approximately 10 hours of play and makes for a quick pick up and play title with plenty of charm. It earned a decent Metacritic review score of 76 despite being a mobile port.

Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands

Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands continues one of the longest running franchises in gaming. The series has been known for its platforming action and the 75 Metacritic review score points to this being a high note. Unfortunately, the PS3 game’s plot is a bit wonky along with some of the combat mechanics.

Datura

Datura is a PlayStation Move title released for the PS3 in 2012 that can also be played with the standard DualShock controller. The game would be classified as a “walking simulator” if released today and was actually fairly cheap at release at only $10. The Plastic Studios title received many negative reviews thanks to its short two hour time length, lack of much to do, and controls that were clunky when using either the PS Move or DualShock. The game earned a 57 review score average on Metacritic.

Amnesia: Memories

Amnesia: Memories is a visual novel game for the PS Vita. The anime-style game from Idea Factory follows a female heroine who has lost her memory and must figure out a series of complex relationship with five men. The game received mixed reviews on Metacritic with a 72 review score showing the visual novel meets dating sim type of game is clearly not for everyone.
