September Free Games For Xbox Live Gold Members Include ‘Forza Horizon’ & ‘Assassin’s Creed Chronicles’

A fresh set of free games for Xbox Live Gold members is coming tomorrow. Microsoft recently revealed the list of free Games with Gold titles for the month of September via a post on Major Nelson.

Beginning this Thursday, Xbox 360 owners with Xbox Live Gold subscription can get their own copy of Forza Horizon. The racing video game, initially released in 2012, is regularly priced at $20. However, with Microsoft’s latest offering, eligible gamers will be able to keep it without shelling out any dime. But take note, Forza Horizon is only free from September 1 to 15.

A Twitter post from Microsoft’s Larry Hyrb a.k.a Major Nelson also announced that Forza Horizon, along with Castle Illusion, is now included in the list of Xbox Backward Compatibility. This means that gamers can also enjoy this Xbox 360 title using the Xbox One.

But Games with Gold September treats for Xbox 360 users do not stop there. Another Xbox 360 title is set to replace Forza Horizon in the list of free games for Xbox Live Gold members in the second half of the month. From September 16 to 30, Mirror’s Edge, an action-adventure platformer normally priced at $15, will be available for $0.

Mirror’s Edgetakes place in a “city where information is heavily monitored,” and “agile couriers called runners transport sensitive data away from prying eyes.” In this first-person action-adventure title, gamers will play as Faith, a Runner being hunted when her sister was framed for a crime, according to Metacritic’s summary of the game. Mirror’s Edge got a 79/100 MetaScore from the website while the average User Score it received is 7.6/10.

Meanwhile, Xbox Live Gold members who own the Xbox One, Microsoft’s current-generation console, can also take advantage of two free games. Developed by Snowcastle Games, Earthlock: Festival of Magic on Xbox One will come with a regular price of $29.99. But in celebration of its September 1 launch, the role-playing game is going to be free for the entire month for Xbox Live Gold subscribers.

Xbox Wire’s description for the game read:

“This westernized turn-based RPG, which in subtle ways reveals its Scandinavian origin, starts as a simple quest, but develops into a deeper journey. Play as Amon and join several unlikely heroes to save Umbra, a beautiful but harsh world that mysteriously stopped spinning thousands of cycles ago. Mix up your strategy to beat your enemies by crafting ammo and materials, harvesting elemental plants, and customizing your characters’ talent tree.”

Watch the launch trailer for Earthlock: Festival of Magic, also scheduled to arrive on PC on Thursday. Its PS4 and Wii U versions are set for release at a later date.

Completing the set of free games for Xbox Live Gold members this September is Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China. Released April of last year, the Ubisoft video game usually comes with a $9.99 price tag. But starting September 16, the Xbox One version can be obtained at no expense at all by those with active Xbox Live Gold membership. This offer for Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China is scheduled to run until October, specifically until the 15th.

The standalone side-scroller game developed by Climax Studios and Ubisoft Montreal is set in 16th Century China. It stars Shao Jun, who, according to IGN, is a fan-favorite from the animated movie Assassin’s Creed Embers.

“Trained by Ezio Auditore, Shao Jun has returned to Beijing as the last remaining Assassin of the Chinese Brotherhood,” the game description added. “Hell-bent on revenge, she will strike out against those who destroyed her Brotherhood.”

Microsoft’s Games With Gold program created for its Xbox Live Gold members typically offers two Xbox One titles and two Xbox 360 games each month for free.
