What Naz may or may not have done was commit the brutal murder of the troubled and mysterious Andrea, in the first episode of the season. While Naz admits that he took drugs and had sex with Andrea — a girl he met only a few hours earlier when she hopped into the taxicab that Naz “borrowed” (without permission) from his father — he claims to have no recollection of killing her, and insists that an intruder must have done it while Naz had passed out from the drug and alcohol intake.
But of course, The Night Of has received the widespread critical acclaim that it has — rating 95 percent positive with critics, and 92 percent favorable with audiences on the review-aggregating site Rotten Tomatoes — because it is far more than a murder mystery.
Creators Steve Zallian, a prolific screenwriter, director, and producer, and Richard Price — one of America’s most respected crime novelists, who also wrote several episodes of HBO’s earlier, widely hailed crime drama The Wire — have fashioned a story not simply about a crime, but about the United States justice system itself, and the devastating effects it can have on both the guilty and the innocent.
Departing from the BBC series Criminal Justice, of which The Night Of is technically a remake, Zallian and Price chose to make the series’ young and possibly wrongly accused lead character an American Muslim of Pakistani descent, also shedding light on some of the more troubling social issues of America in the age of ISIS.
The Night Of features what are certain to be a number of Emmy-nominated performances, including by 33-year-old British export Riz Ahmed as Naz. But perhaps the standout performance comes from veteran Hollywood character actor John Turturro, best known for his roles in several classic Coen Brothers films, including Barton Fink and The Big Lebowski.
Turturro portrays down-and-out, but determined and street-savvy, lawyer John Stone, who stumbles onto Naz’s case — and won’t let go.
The role, however, was originally designed for Sopranos star James Gandolfini, who sadly passed away in 2013, but is still credited as an executive producer on The Night Of.
Watch several cast members, including Turturro, discuss how they prepared for their roles, in the video below.
