NFL Rumors: Carlos Hyde Concussion Means San Francisco 49ers Need A Running Back

Some NFL players simply cannot stay healthy. According to Yahoo! Sports, Carlos Hyde suffered a concussion. The brain injury took place when the San Francisco 49ers played the Green Bay Packers in a preseason game on Friday night. The Niners will now need to find another running back for depth.

As the San Francisco 49ers go through their rebuilding period, there was a glimmer of hope when last season began. Carlos Hyde showed the tremendous potential that made him a second round draft pick in 2014. The former Ohio State Buckeyes star was supposed to be the man to replace Frank Gore, a franchise centerpiece for years.

Injuries robbed Carlos Hyde of a good season, and the San Francisco 49ers had to rely on an assortment of running backs. Shaun Draughn, Mike Davis, DuJuan Harris, Jarryd Hayne, Kendall Gaskins, and Reggie Bush were all given rushes by the Niners. None were able to capture the job.

Coming into this season, the San Francisco 49ers were concerned about the health of Carlos Hyde. His skills and talents are needed if Chip Kelly is to have a successful first year as the head coach. The high power offense needs someone like Hyde to be the centerpiece.

Now, the San Francisco 49ers have to wait 15 days before they can get Carlos Hyde back on a football field. The NFL’s concussion protocol requires him to stay away from practice. Hyde needs to be cleared before he can start practicing for the regular season opener against the Los Angeles Rams.

According to the Bleacher Report, Shaun Draughn is more than likely going to get the start during the fourth and final preseason game for the San Francisco 49ers. Draughn has been sitting out of the previous two games because he suffered a rib injury during a scrimmage against the Denver Broncos, but the Niners feel that it is not a serious one.

Kelvin Taylor, Mike Davis, and Kendall Gaskins are also listed on the depth chart, so they could see playing time as well. The San Francisco 49ers might want to play it safe with Shaun Draughn since Carlos Hyde is not available.

The injury to Carlos Hyde comes at a really bad time for the San Francisco 49ers. Chip Kelly and the coaching staff have been trying to figure out the situation at the quarterback position. Thus far, no one has really stood out and captured the starting position.

Blaine Gabbert has been pretty average during the preseason. While he is a solid veteran, the San Francisco 49ers fan base is going to have a really difficult time getting excited about the upcoming season, regardless of what Chip Kelly brings to the table with his high profile offensive scheme.

Colin Kaepernick was out during the first two preseason games because of what was said to be arm fatigue. That caused the quarterback competition to stall a bit. Despite being a bit behind schedule, Kaepernick still had a chance to win the starting job because Blaine Gabbert did not capture it.

Now that he is healthy, Colin Kaepernick finally managed to get on the field. Unfortunately for the San Francisco 49ers, he did very little against the Green Bay Packers to prove that he was worthy of being the starting quarterback once again. Kaepernick will get another chance during the final preseason game to make his case, but it is not looking good right now.

The rebuilding period does not look all that good for the San Francisco 49ers right now. Their offense appears to be in trouble. Hopefully, Carlos Hyde makes a full recovery soon.
