Racist Note Instead Of Tip: Couple Accused Of Insulting Latina Waitress Banned From Diner [Video]

An 18-year-old Latina waitress in Virginia recently got a racist note instead of a tip. The note was scribbled on the receipt of a blond couple and signed by “Ada M. Doriot.” The moment the couple, who ordered two gyros, two drinks and a salad totaling $26.11, paid for their meal was caught on camera at the diner, Jess’ Lunch. In the video, you can see the woman writing her name and presumably the racist note she included instead of a tip for her young waitress.

So, what was so “racist” about the note that the waitress, Sadie Elledge, received instead of her tip?

According to a report by WUSA 9, the instead of a tip, the racist note called out Sadie’s nationality and heritage. Allegedly, the couple (or at least the woman, who did the writing on the receipt in question) wrote that she reserved tips only for “citizens.”

“WE ONLY TIP CITIZENS.”

While there are multiple reasons that it’s wrong to leave a racist note instead of a tip to any hardworking server, the racist note that Sadie received was even more insulting because she is a citizen of the United States. Despite being of Mexican and Honduran descent, Sadie herself was born in the States.

After receiving the racist note instead of a tip, Sadie told her grandfather what happened and showed him the receipt substantiating her unbelievable and insulting story, reports the Washington Post.

Infuriated, Sadie’s grandfather, attorney John Elledge, took his outrage to social media. He shared the the racist note on his Facebook page, and the incident his young granddaughter endured has since gone viral.

Included with the photograph of the grease-stained receipt, John Elledge added a note of his own, telling the woman who left the racist note instead of a tip for his granddaughter what he thought of her and her racism.

“You are a complete and total piece of dung.”

Sadie’s grandfather had further harsh words for the people who so rudely insulted his granddaughter with their racist note.

“I’d happily do the jail time if I could get just one solid punch in to the face of the son of a b***h who paid for his meal at the luncheonette where my granddaughter works and left the receipt for her with a note saying, ‘Sorry, we only tip citizens.'”

As for Sadie, who was on the receiving end of the racist note, she said that she would happily serve the customers again. Despite the fact that, according to the teen waitress, the pair made her uncomfortable from the moment they walked into her place of employment. According to Sadie, the couple largely refused to speak to her and communicated mostly through nods.

In an ironic twist, the young Latina who received a racist note instead of a tip has told the media that the woman who insisted that she only tips “citizens” had an accent of her own.

Reportedly, the couple responsible for leaving the racist note instead of a tip for their Latina waitress were upset about the amount of negative attention their racist note has caused them to receive. According to Tom Marchese, manager at Jess’ Lunch, the couple came back into the restaurant after the note they left on the receipt went viral.

Reportedly, the man who had shared lunch with the woman who scrawled the racist note was angry that personal information (the last four digits of a credit card) was visible on the receipt.

“I said it’s not even your card. Are you really concerned about that or are you more concerned about what was put on social media? He said, ‘Well, both.'”

According to Marchese, the man was “angry and yelling” during the altercation. In response, the manager of the diner advised him to take his anger out on the person who left the racist note instead of a tip on the receipt, not the restaurant’s manager.

On the way out of the store, the couple involved in leaving the racist note reportedly bumped into Sadie’s grandfather, who had heard that the couple who insulted his granddaughter was back and headed to Jess’ Lunch to confront them in person.

“She was asking me why I posted it. I said obviously, it was an insult — your signature against my granddaughter — darn right I’m going to post it. And no apologies.”

The surveillance footage at the restaurant has been reviewed, and according to multiple reports, substantiates Sadie’s version of events. While the young Latina waitress has said she’d be perfectly willing to serve the patrons again in the future even though they left her a racist note instead of a tip, the owner of the restaurant hasn’t been quite so forgiving.

Angeliki Floros, Owner of Jess’ Lunch, says she wants an apology from the couple before they’re welcome to dine again in her establishment. As Eater reports, she was not pleased about the racist note left instead of a tip.

“I would like for them to not come here unless they regret what they did.”

What do you think? Was it improper for these customers to leave their Latina waitress a racist note? Was Sadie’s grandfather acting appropriately when he posted the photo of the racist note left instead of a tip on social media?
