The 10 Best Scary Movies On Netflix That Will Give You Chills

Looking through titles for a good scary movie can sometimes be time consuming; this list of the 10 best scary movies on Netflix should spare you some time and offer up titles to give you chills. Some of these movies went under the radar while other film titles are classics that deserve to be revisited. Many times, viewers search through Netflix and many of the movies seem to be generic or of bad quality, and many of them are, but often these titles end up surpassing audiences expectations.

Creep

The found-footage movie genre is often oversaturated and rarely does the film live up to the hype of the trailer. Creep surpasses the trailer and offers some originality to this genre. The movie stars two actors, Patrick Brice (who is also the director) and Mark Duplass (The League), and the film has a 96 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Duplass plays a character that places a Craigslist-like ad for a videographer; Brice’s character answers the ad and the movie unravels from there. There are moments in the movie that offer comic relief but by the end of the 77 minutes, Netflix audiences will certainly be creeped out.

Housebound

Housebound was Gerard Johnstone’s directorial debut and he delivered with a bang; the movie scored 97 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. On the surface, this film looks like any other scary haunted house flick, but it’s so much more than that. Rotten Tomatoesdescribes one of the scariest movies on Netflix.

“Kylie Bucknell is forced to return to the house she grew up in when the court places her on home detention. Her punishment is made all the more unbearable by the fact she has to live there with her mother Miriam – a well-intentioned blabbermouth who’s convinced that the house is haunted. Kylie dismisses Miriam’s superstitions as nothing more than a distraction from a life occupied by boiled vegetables & small-town gossip. However, when she too becomes privy to unsettling whispers & strange bumps in the night, she begins to wonder whether she’s inherited her overactive imagination, or if the house is in fact possessed by a hostile spirit who’s not particularly thrilled about her return.”

This film is classified as a horror-comedy and it does give the audience plenty of laugh-out-loud moments, but the laughs don’t overshadow the suspense this movie also offers Netflix viewers.

Hush

Hush will be a pleasant surprise for Netflix viewers who just chalked this movie up as yet another film about a killer who chases a woman throughout a house and tries to kill her. And that is essentially what the movie is about; but there is enough originality, suspense, and sheer terror that make this film stand out from its contemporaries. This movie scored a stunning 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and it is well deserved.

Hush, a movie distributed by Netflix, is about a deaf woman who lives in seclusion and on a fateful night a killer appears at her window. It doesn’t take the killer long to learn of the woman’s impairment and he starts to toy with her. The masked lunatic underestimates his prey, however, and a game of cat-and-mouse ensues.

The Babadook

This movie is a favorite among Netflix subscribers and horror fans everywhere. A widowed mother is raising her son who fears a monster is lurking in their house. A children’s book inexplicably shows up in the house and an ominous presence looms. This movie is not driven by cheap thrills, but rather, real horror with strong characters the audience will become invested in. This is the perfect Netflix movie to watch alone if you are in the mood to stay up the whole night jumping at every creek and sound you hear.

The Den

The Den masterfully brings in modern technology to the horror movie genre. A graduate student is doing her thesis about the habits of online users in a video-chat site called The Den. During one of her chat sessions she witness a young woman brutally murdered. The killer starts targeting the graduate’s loved ones and the suspense begins. This movie is told through the lens of a webcam and at times is very unsettling.

Blink

This 1994 movie starring Madeleine Stowe stands the test of time and is worth revisiting or perhaps a first visit by younger generations. Stowe plays Emma, a blind musician who gets the chance to see again via a transplant. One night she witnesses a murder and sees the suspect flee. Although she has gained her sight back, her vision is blurry and she can’t quite make out the suspect. It turns out that there has been a string of murders and all of the victims have been recipients of a transplant. The killer starts stalking Emma and the suspense will put Netflix viewers on the edge of their seat.

Cape Fear

This 1991 movie is a remake of the 1962 film starring Robert Mitchum. Cape Fear has an ensemble cast with Robert De Niro, Nick Nolte, Jessica Lange, and Juliette Lewis, and it is directed by the great Martin Scorsese. The movie premise is simple and delivers suspense and thrills; Cape Fear is about an ex-con who spent 14 years in prison for a series of rapes and he seeks revenge against the prosecuting attorney. Netflix subscribers should also keep an eye out for an appearance by Robert Mitchum in this suspenseful tale.

The Awakening

This movie is an old-fashioned supernatural thriller set in 1921 London. Rebecca Hall plays Florence, a woman who has built a career by relying on science to expose false claims of supernatural occurrences. She is hired to investigate an all-boys boarding school where a child recently died and the students claim to see sightings of his ghost. As she investigates, Florence soon realizes that science will not be able to explain what is haunting the school.

Flowers in the Attic

Not to be confused with the Lifetime atrocity, this 1987 movie is an adaptation by the popular V.C. Andrews’ novel of the same name. This movie is about a widowed mother who takes her children to live with their grandparents in a creepy old mansion. The kids end up being kept in a secret room below the attic and they are only visited by their grandmother. This movie isn’t as suspenseful as it is downright creepy and the incestuous overtones help in that regard. The children’s imprisonment is the main focus of this film and will give Netflix viewers chills as they watch their tale.

Angel Heart

Another De Niro film on this list of 10 best scary movies on Netflix is Angel Heart. Alongside De Niro are co-stars Mickey Rourke and Lisa Bonet. From its inception to its release in 1987, this movie was surrounded by controversy. No major film studio was willing to take on this controversial script, based on the 1978 novel Falling Angel, and independent film studio Carolco Pictures took on the task and it was distributed by Tri-Star Pictures. Although it didn’t do well in its initial release, many horror movie fans consider this film to be one of the all-time best.

At the time, Lisa Bonet was known for her role as Denise in The Cosby Show and her risque and steamy sex scene with Rourke left audiences in shock. Director Alan Parker had to remove 10 seconds of the sexual scene in order to avoid an X-rating. But this wasn’t the only controversy; the satanic premise of the film also turned heads.

The movie is based in 1955 and is about a detective (Rourke) who is hired to track down a missing musician who reneged on a bet. Each time the detective questions someone who might know of the whereabouts of the artist, they are killed in a ritualistic and gruesome manner. The detective soon starts to suspect that a satanic cult is behind the grisly murders and that him being chosen for the job wasn’t random.

From Creep to Angel Heart, this list of the 10 best scary movies on Netflix will give you plenty of material to spend an evening on the edge of your seat.
