Jay Z, Beyonce’s Husband May Have Lost A Deal Courtesy Of Kanye West

Jay Z, Beyonce’s husband, is one of the most successful businessmen in the music business. Presently aged 46, he has a net worth of about $550 million, and has interests in the clothing, entertainment, and sports industries. But among his ventures, Tidal, a music streaming subscription service, has been making headlines lately. Partly owned by musicians such as Nicki Minaj, Kanye West, Beyonce, and Madonna, it has serious clout in the entertainment industry, with major artists choosing to release their songs exclusively through it to help boost their earning potential.

However, it only has 4.2 million subscribers compared to other competitors such as Apple, which has upwards of 13 million and Spotify, which is the industry leader, boasting some 30 million paying members and about 100 million in total. This is as reported by Fortune. Of course, with all this competition, there is a need for players such as Apple to try and stay relevant by buying out services such as Tidal, which has of late been showing a lot of growth potential.

The release of Beyonce’s Lemonade on the network was for example said to have significantly boosted subscription numbers, and when Kanye West’s Life of Pablo debuted on the site, the number was said to have doubled. With Apple iTunes music downloads presently said to be on the decline, there were reports a few months ago that Apple was in talks with Jay Z to buy Tidal so as to gain a greater market share. The following is an excerpt of the report by WSJ.

“Apple Inc. is in talks to acquire Tidal, a streaming-music service run by rap mogul Jay Z, according to people familiar with the matter. Apple is exploring the idea of bringing on Tidal to bolster its Apple Music service because of Tidal’s strong ties to popular artists such as Kanye West and Madonna.

The talks are ongoing and may not result in a deal, these people said. Terms of the potential deal aren’t known.”

Negotiations are said to have hit a brick wall, prompting Kanye West to voice his disappointment in his signature style – ranting on and on about it on Twitter.

Being one of the stakeholders in Tidal, Kanye West, like other artists in the service is bound to cash out, which may be one of the reasons why he wants Apple to buy Tidal. Kanye West may however also be genuinely concerned about the beef between the executives, given that streaming services have affected collaborations between artists thanks to exclusive releases.

For example, although Tidal has artists such as Beyonce and Jay Z releasing their music exclusively, Apple has Drake and Future. This in the long run limits cooperation between entertainers on both sides, and of course they can’t take get to release their songs simultaneously on both, at least initially.

However, given the verbiage in his tweets to the music execs, it is unlikely that they may be willing to honor his wishes any time soon.
