‘Masters Of The Universe’: McG Wants To Make The Movie Very Soon And Has A Name In Mind For He-Man

There is a huge nostalgia rush as of late, and that has become evident with shows like Stranger Things and the fact that the Transformers franchise just keeps on growing. For years, there has been talk of another He-Man and the Masters of the Universe becoming a reality, but it appears closer now than ever before. The direction known simply as McG is ready to do the film, is ready to do it quickly, and he even has a name in mind for the lead role.

If ever there was a true piece of nostalgia to breathe new life into, it would have to be He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. According to IGN, there is a director attached, and it is none other than McG who brought Terminator Salvation and Charlie’s Angels to life.

The reboot of the movie franchise is pretty much going to start from scratch since there has been no real mention of the 1987 film which starred Dolph Lundgren. McG already knows what he has in mind for the tone of the film and how he wants Masters of the Universe to be presented to the viewers.

“It’s a very exciting moment for Masters of the Universe. We have a big meeting with Sony regarding prep of the movie on Wednesday. And we’re in the middle of a bit of a script polish, and it’s my absolute passion. I’m laser-focused on that being my next film. But I mean, you know how it works in contemporary filmmaking. You really, really have to earn the good will of the parent studio, and Tom Rothman runs a tight ship at Sony, and we’re going to get there. I’m so happy to report that to the fans.”

Knowing that he is “laser-focused” on making Masters of the Universe his next film is a good thing as it could be in theaters before anyone even realizes it. The good thing is that McG seems truly excited about the film and wants the content to be done in the right way.

True fans know that there doesn’t need to be another go at the franchise like that from 1987.

While the film is still in the very early stages, many have wondered who could possibly step into the lead roles. There is Skeletor, Man-At-Arms, Teela, Evil-Lyn, and, of course, He-Men himself. McG actually has someone in mind for that role and it’s possible that he could land him if there are no scheduling conflicts.

“We haven’t cast the role yet, but I like Kellan very much. Obviously, we need a talented entertainer, but we also need a certain physicality, which he embodies. He’ll be considered very, very closely. We haven’t gotten to the casting process yet. Kellan’s a good guy, and we had a great meeting, and he’s passionate about He-Man, he’s passionate about the Adam story. He really knows a lot about it. I was charmed by his focus and intensity. He’ll be considered very, very carefully. We’re just not there yet. We’ve got to get the movie on its feet, then we’ll cast the movie.”

While it seems obvious that Kellan Lutz is the obvious first choice for He-Man, casting has not even come close to starting yet. McG and Sony have a lot of things to work through before getting to that point, but it’s promising to know that there are already some ideas in mind.

While a full plot has not yet been revealed, Screen Rant did single out a few key points that McG touched upon, including the following.

  • Prince Adam and He-Man may or may not be played by two people
  • It will not be set entirely on Eternia and Earth will be mentioned, but won’t play into the story much.
  • Makeup testing is being done now to see if CGI won’t have to be used as much.
  • Evil-Lyn has been confirmed.
  • Cringer and Battle Cat have been confirmed.

Masters of the Universe had great success as an animated TV series, as a toy line, and as a comic book, but the movie wasn’t really that good. The 1987 film was just done in a very weird way, and fans have wanted a true He-Man movie for a very long time. It seems incredibly possible that McG is finally going to be the one to bring it to the fans and Kellan Lutz may see what it is like to raise his sword and speak those magic words.
