The most anticipated match of the 2016-2017 English Premier League opening weekend pit Arsenal against longtime foes Liverpool on Sunday, in a clash that upped the ante on the opening weekend of the new season, and may stand out as one og the most exciting of the 221 meetings in the 123-year history of the rivalry.
In a rollicking, crowd-pleasing affair, Liverpool hung on to get the better of Arsenal 4-3, after falling behind 1-0 them storming back to take a 4-1 lead with just over 60 minute played. To relive all of the goals and highlights of he match, scroll down this page for video.
Arsenal first faced Liverpool in October of 1893. The Reds have had the better of the lengthy rivalry — though not by much — winning 83 to 78 for the Gunners to go with 59 matches drawn. In fact, the two teams deadlocked both of their Premier League matches last season, with a 0-0 draw at the Emirates in August, followed by a more spirited 3-3 affair when the matchup moved north to Anfield on January 13 of this year.

For Arsenal, who again host the initial meeting of the teams this season, the game will mark the Premier League debut of Manager Arsene Wenger’s £33 million — or about U.S. $43 million — summer signing, Granit Xhaka, the 23-year-old Swiss prodigy whose impressive performances for German Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach first caught Wenger’s eye more than a year before the signing was completed.

Wenger is confident that the highly-touted midfielder will need little time to adjust to the grueling pace of Premier League competition.
“He has not played in the Premier League yet, but I’m confident he will adapt very quickly because he is very keen and he wants to work and wants to become a top-level player,” Wenger told Britain’s Daily Mirror this week. “His attitude is spot on, so when the attitude is as it is at the moment, the player’s adaption is very fast.”

Liverpool Manager Jurgen Klopp, entering his second season at Anfield and charged with lifting the Reds into the top four this year after a seventh-place finish in 2015-2016, said that despite Arsenal and Wenger’s tradition of running a smooth-passing, continental style game, he expects a more “direct” approach from Arsenal on Sunday.

“In the last few years Arsenal had a more direct style. They have only good football players, but at the end they don’t use all of them in each build up or each offensive movement — it is a myth,” Klopp told ESPN FC on Saturday. “Arsenal is usually a football playing team, but last time against us there was a lot of long balls and always to Olivier Giroud.”
Giroud, however, is not yet ready to play following his run to the final of the 2016 Euros in July with the France national team and will be missing from the Arsenal lineup Sunday, along with fellow French international Laurent Koscielny. Danny Welbeck and Per Mertesacker will also be out of action for Arsenal.
Liverpool expects both Daniel Sturridge and James Milner to miss the Arsenal game with injuries.
