Andy Serkis, the British actor who famously portrayed Gollum in director Peter Jackson’s epic cinematic adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Ring, read an excerpt from The Hobbit at recent event. According to Cinema Blend,, attendees of a Hobbit-oriented celebration were dazzled by the appearance of Serkis, who took a moment to read a few lines from the award-winning novel as the character he helped bring to life on the big screen.
“Part of the difficulty of doing ‘The Hobbit’ twelve years later is kind of reclaiming him, because I’ve heard that many impersonations and people have asked me to do that many telephone messages for them,” Serkis explained to Entertainment Weekly.
In case you haven’t heard, award-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson is set to return to the world of endless fantasy when he drops The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey on moviegoers this Christmas. The film, which stars Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, and Richard Armitage, follows the adventures of a much younger Bilbo Baggins as he ventures to the Lonely Mountain with several Dwarves in an attempt to destroy the thieving dragon known as Smaug. The adventure continues on December 14.
In true Lord of the Rings fashion, The Hobbit will be split into a number of full-length features. Almost a year after the first installment arrives in theaters, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug will hit the big screen on December 13, 2013. The final chapter, The Hobbit: There and Back Again, won’t arrive in theaters until July 18, 2014. However, only the first two endeavors will feature Andy Serkis.
The Hobbit isn’t the only sequel the busy actor has in the works at the moment. Andy Serkis is also slated to reprise his role as Caesar in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Although the film presently doesn’t have a director — Rupert Wyatt reportedly left the production several days ago — it’s still slated to arrive in theaters on May 23, 2014.
