The 2016 Adult Swim Drive-In Coming To A Town Near You

Adult Swim, the popular late-night television network, may be coming to your town soon. The 2016 “Adult Swim Drive-In” event is kicking off later this month, and running through September.

In their press release, Adult Swim describes the event as “Nights of Fun and Freebies.”

“Fans from all across the country can soon roll up with their crew to the 2016 Adult Swim Drive-In. They will enjoy a free magical night with Adult Swim, basic cable’s #1 network with millennials for over a decade, and get a first look at what’s on the programming horizon starting next month … an ultimate exclusive sneak peek at unaired episodes, never-before-seen pilots and specials, and loads of other Adult Swim favorites. Fans will also enjoy food trucks, free popcorn, concessions, games, and prizes … The content, which will be shown on a massive 40-foot inflatable screen, will be updated periodically throughout the tour.”

They go on to say that “vouchers for a free meal from one of the food trucks on-site will be handed out, while supplies last.” To live it up in full drive-in style, you may “also bring their own picnic dinners,” depending on the venue.

The 2016 Adult Swim Drive-In is not a brand new idea. This event is another in a semi-regular, ongoing series of tours and events showcasing otherwise unaired Adult Swim content. Just last month, Adult Swim presented an event at Comic Con San Diego, titled “Adult Swim On The Green.”

A highlight of the Adult Swim Comic Con experience has been the VR-esque “Meatwad Dome Experience.” It features a pseudo-3D short film inside a venue shaped like Meatwad, the childish character from the popular Adult Swim program Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

At each event, upcoming material for shows not yet broadcast on the channel is shown. For example, the 2014 Adult Swim Drive-In event showed a sneak peak of The Mike Tyson Mysteries, a show which did not premiere on television until later that fall.

Adult Swim began in September of 2001, meaning this year will mark the 15th anniversary of the network. Originally starting out as a late-night programming block of Cartoon Network, it designated itself to be its own channel in 2005 (for ratings purposes). According to the Adult Swim press release, they are now “basic cable’s #1 network with persons 18-34 and 18-49, and is seen in 94 million U.S. homes.”

The network has always placed a focus on irreverent, absurdist programming, gaining a large cult following for many of the shows that have aired on the network. Popular shows from the history of the 15-year run of the network include Space Ghost Coast To Coast, Sealab 2021, Harvey Birdman Attorney At Law, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, The Venture Brothers, Robot Chicken, Squidbillies, Metalocalypse, Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Superjail, Children’s Hospital, The Eric Andre Show, and Rick and Morty. This lengthy list only scratches the surface of the unusual (and unusually successful) lineup of original shows, not to mention successful reruns of Family Guy, Futurama, and King Of The Hill.

If you live nearby, you may now get to see a glimpse what could become the next unusual hit program for Adult Swim, as well as catch some unaired scenes from current hits.
